Jacob Chansley, the former Navy actor and sailor better known as QAnon Shaman, who has been described by a prosecutor as “the flag bearer” of the Jan.6 attack on the Capitol, was sentenced on Wednesday. to 41 months in prison.

Mr Chansley, 34, has become one of the riot’s most familiar figures, largely because of the odd costume he wore that day: a horned helmet, fur skin draped over her bare shoulders and a thick patina of red-white-and-blue paint to the face.

Images of him standing on the Senate floor screaming and wielding a spear made from a flag pole pulled around the world, a stark reminder of the role played in the assault by followers of QAnon, the sectarian conspiracy theory adopted by some supporters of former President Donald J Trump.

Mr Chansley’s sentence, handed down by Judge Royce C. Lamberth of the Washington District Federal Court, ended not only one of the most high-profile Capitol Hill cases, but one of the strangest as well. . Shortly after the attack, Mr Chansley’s attorney Albert Watkins announced his client wanted Mr Trump to pardon him and then offered to testify in the former president’s second impeachment trial. .

In February, Mr. Watkins persuaded a federal judge to order the Virginia prison where Mr. Chansley was held for most of his case to serve a strict diet of organic meals. The following month, Mr. Chansley donated a much-watched interview with “60 Minutes“, claiming that his actions on January 6 were not an attack on the nation, but rather a means of” bringing God back to the Senate. “

That circus atmosphere continued on Wednesday as dozens of people attended a hearing in which Mr Watkins called on Judge Lamberth to heal the country’s divisions with a fair sentence. Mr Watkins told the judge he could “do justice and focus on a common ground on which we can all, in one way or another, bridge this great gap.”

When Mr. Chansley addressed the court, he quoted Jesus, Gandhi and Judge Clarence Thomas. He then spoke about his tattoos, his late grandfather’s role in his life and the prison movie “The Shawshank Redemption”.

He also apologized for his role in the attack on Capitol Hill, saying that since then he often looked at himself in the mirror and said to himself, “You really screwed up, royally.”

More than 30 people were convicted in the attack on the Capitol, most of whom avoided prison by pleading guilty to minor offenses like disorderly conduct or an illegal parade in the building. Last week, former New Jersey gym owner also sentenced to 41 months in jail for hitting a police officer during the riot – the first of nearly 200 cases of rioting of people accused of assault to reach the sentencing phase.

Mr. Chansley pleaded guilty in September to a single count of obstructing formal proceedings before Congress. In court on Wednesday, Watkins pleaded for leniency on his behalf, claiming, among other things, that he had lived for several years with mental illness. After an assessment, Judge Lamberth found Mr. Chansley competent enough to continue his case.

The government had recommended that he be sentenced to 51 months in prison, saying that long before January 6, Mr Chansley had encouraged his numerous social networks to “identify the traitors in our government” and “stop the theft” – a reference to Mr. Trump’s repeated lies that the 2020 election was marred by fraud.

Two weeks after the end of the presidential race, Mr Chansley was already promoting online violence, prosecutors said, posting a message that read: “We will have no real hope of surviving the enemies deployed against us until. that we hang the traitors who hide among us.

On January 6, according to the government, Mr Chansley was among the first 30 rioters to enter the Capitol and quickly used a megaphone to “piss off the crowd and demand that lawmakers get out.” In less than an hour he had arrived in the Senate, taking the seat Vice President Mike Pence had just vacated and leaving a note on the dais saying, “It’s only a matter of time. Justice is coming! “

In the days following the attack, Mr. Chansley gave an interview to NBC News in which he said he considered January 6 “a victory”. He also told the FBI he believed Mr. Pence was “a child trafficking traitor” and that the US government was tyrannical, prosecutors said.

After Mr Chansley’s lengthy speech in court, Judge Lamberth thanked him, saying the comments were among the most remarkable he had heard in 34 years on the bench. But the judge then told Mr Chansley he would still have to serve a prison sentence.

“What you have done is terrible,” he said.
