Kyle Rittenhouse is on trial for the shooting of three men – two of whom died – immediately after protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on August 25, 2020.

Protests erupted after a Kenosha policeman shot and wounded a black man, Jacob Blake. The episode, captured on cellphone video, came at a time of protests across the country over the murder of George Floyd and police abuse against black Americans.

Kenosha experimented widespread looting, arson and destruction of property in the days following Mr. Blake’s gunshot. Mr Rittenhouse’s gunfire, which he said was carried out in self-defense, occurred on the third night of protests in the town.

  • Intentional homicide in the first degree.

  • First degree intentional homicide attempt.

  • Reckless homicide in the first degree.

  • Reckless endangerment (two counts).

Homicide charges, equivalent to what other states call murder charges, carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. Weapons offense charge dismissed near the end of the trial.

The defendant

Mr Rittenhouse, now 18, was 17 when the shooting took place. He lived with his mother in Antioch, Ill., Just across the border from Wisconsin. Her father lived in Kenosha.

Mr Rittenhouse had worked for a time as a lifeguard in Kenosha County and had a military-style semi-automatic rifle in Wisconsin, which authorities said had been bought for him by a friend.

Long before the shooting, Mr Rittenhouse’s social media accounts were teeming with posts supporting the police and Blue Lives Matter. He had been a cadet in a program for young aspiring police officers.

Those who were shot

  • Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, from Kenosha. He has been killed.

  • Anthony Huber, 26, who lived in Kenosha County. He has been killed.

  • Gaige Grosskreutz, 26 at the time, a medic from West Allis, Wisconsin. He was shot in the arm and survived.

The trial judge reiterated a long-standing rule that since the issue of self-defense is at issue in the trial, those who were shot cannot be qualified as “victims” in his courtroom.

On the evening of August 25, protesters packed Civic Center Park in downtown Kenosha, in front of a boarded up courthouse defended by police and National Guard soldiers. Also present were people dressed in camouflage and carrying rifles with ammunition strapped to their chests – legal for adults in Wisconsin, an open port state.

Some protesters threw fireworks and water bottles at police, who retaliated with tear gas and rubber bullets. The crowds were eventually driven from Civic Center Park and Sheridan Road, a major thoroughfare. By late evening most of the protesters had left the area, but some remained on Sheridan Road, occasionally scuffling and arguing with several dozen people who said they were there to defend the city.

What happened

Video taken that evening showed Mr Rittenhouse, who had joined a group of armed people who claimed to be there to protect businesses, was walking Sheridan Road and providing medical assistance to protesters. Shortly before midnight, he was chased into the parking lot of a car dealership by Mr. Rosenbaum, who had joined the downtown crowd.

A man nearby fired a handgun into the air. As Mr. Rittenhouse turned to the sound of the gunfire, Mr. Rosenbaum pounced on him. Mr Rittenhouse fired four times, shooting Mr Rosenbaum in the head, the video shows.

Mr Rittenhouse then fled onto Sheridan Road with at least a dozen members of the mob chasing him. You could hear shouting: “It’s the shooter!” “

Moments later Mr Rittenhouse tripped and fell, then shot two other people chasing him, Mr Huber and Mr Grosskreutz.

As the police vehicles arrived, Mr Rittenhouse walked towards them with his arms raised, but they walked past him, trying to reach the people who had been shot.
