In a heartbreaking first interview, two of the 13 Turpin siblings spoke about the abuse they faced from their own parents at a house in Perris, Calif.

Talk to Diane Sawyer for ABCJordan Turpin, 22, and his sister, Jennifer Turpin, 33, have revealed startling details about the horrors they endured inside the house by their parents, David and Louise Turpin.

When the police first approached the house, after Jordan, then a 17-year-old girl, made a phone call to authorities in 2018, tons of garbage filled the rooms, urine and feces were strewn against the walls and moldy food was strewn about. observed.

The most disturbing face, however, was when the cops discovered two frail, bruised and dirt-covered girls in one of the filthy rooms.

“Hello sweetheart. Hi girls. May I see your wrists?” One of the officers can be heard saying on the body camera footage. “We’re here to help.”

In another bedroom, a boy is chained to a bed where he had been tied for weeks. Police rushed to release him as they arrested the parents and asked them where to find the key to the chains, according to the footage.

“I told them everything. We don’t go to school. We live in dirt. We will starve. And everything else, ”Jordan told Sawyer of the 911 call she made on Jan. 14, 2018.

“I had to make sure that if I left we wouldn’t go back because – and we’ll get the help we needed – because if we go back there’s no way I’m sitting here in this moment.”

The house has since undergone a massive makeover.

It was auctioned and sold “as is” in March 2019 for $ 270,500 under a foreclosure deal, according to property records.

In March 2020, at the start of the pandemic, it was briefly rented out at $ 2,600 per month.

Composed of four bedrooms and three bathrooms, the house spans over 2,300 square feet.

The Turpin family moved into the house in 2014 for a purchase price of $ 351,000.

The severely abused siblings, aged 2 to 29, were taken to hospital, where they received food and emotional support. It was the first time Jennifer Turpin said she felt free.

“In the hospital, music was playing and I got up… and I danced,” she recalls.

David and Louise Turpin pleaded guilty to 14 counts of torture, forcible confinement and related charges in February 2019 and were subsequently sentenced to 25 years in life imprisonment.

But in a shocking turn of events, in what should have been a fresh start for the rest of their lives, the Turpin children are still struggling today although they were rescued three years ago from the sordid California home where they were shackled, beaten and starved.

Jennifer and Jordan Turpin say they endured years of beatings, verbal abuse and starvation as virtual prisoners in their parents' house, even considering suicide before finally breaking out, according to recently revealed details.

In the interview with Sawyer, Jordan revealed how the system failed after their parents were locked up for life, forced to surf on their couch because they couldn’t find a stable home.

“I don’t really have a way to get food right now,” Jordan said in the interview of when she was abruptly released without warning from an extended foster home.

Five of the youngest children also spent time in foster homes, where accusations of child abuse have come to light.

“They were once again victimized by the system,” Mike Hestrin, the Riverside County district attorney who prosecuted David and Louise Turpin, told ABC.

“It’s unimaginable to me – that we can have the worst case of child abuse that I have ever seen,” he continued, “and then we can’t bring it together to give them the needs. basic.”

The adult and minor children of David Turpin and his wife have struggled since being rescued.

In addition, the siblings struggled to access the $ 600,000 that was donated by strangers to help them after their parents were arrested. Riverside County officials would not provide ABC with any information about the trust established for the Turpin siblings, or say how much was distributed to them. Some even ask why some requests – like when Joshua Turpin, 29, asked for a bicycle for transportation – were turned down.

“If we can’t take care of Turpin’s victims,” Hestrin added, “then how can we have a chance to take care of anyone? “
