I usually go to thrift stores looking for old records. Thanks to Goodwill and the Salvation Army, I managed to buy quite a few unusual records (jazz and classical music), and at low prices too. When I can’t find good records, I search elsewhere in the store, including the T-shirt section. I wonder why not, while I’m here. Thrift stores in the United States are like amusement parks to me. I can easily spend hours there.

How did you come to own a Brooklyn Pickle shirt? I am from Syracuse and have been to this grocery store a number of times.

I had no idea what Brooklyn Pickle meant. I bought it at a thrift store in the Boston area, if I remember correctly, and I was long puzzled as to what kind of place (or store or organization) it was. For a long time, I wondered why, if it’s in Syracuse, they gave it the name Brooklyn. I’m happy to finally learn what it is. I see, so it’s a delicatessen.

I have quite a few T-shirts like this, which I have no idea where they originally came from. Some also have confusing messages. I guess this sense of mystery is also one of the draws of a t-shirt collection.

Which clothing store do you go to most often?

We are far from a thrift store, but I like the Comme des Garçons store in the Aoyama district of Tokyo. It’s such a wonderful clothing store. I can always find a nice jacket that goes perfectly with the ragtag t-shirts I’ve collected. Having said that, I only go there maybe three times a year.

What is your most popular garment, t-shirt or not?

I don’t think I’ll wear it again, but it’s the t-shirt I got for completing the Honolulu Marathon in 1983, the first full marathon I ever completed. Every time I see this shirt it brings back a lot of memories to me.
