Climate advocates have said it is imperative to deliver tangible new commitments in Glasgow.

“The call from the G20 leaders to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is very important,” said Ulka Kelkar, climate director for the Indian office of the World Resources Institute. The Glasgow conference “must now accompany it with measures to rapidly reduce emissions during this decade and urgently step up climate finance”.

Jennifer Morgan, executive director of Greenpeace International, was more direct. “If the G20 was a dress rehearsal,” she said, for the United Nations summit in Glasgow, “then world leaders have inflated their lines.”

“Their statement was weak, lacked both ambition and vision, and simply failed to respond at this time,” Ms. Morgan said.

In their statement, the G20 leaders said: “Keeping 1.5 within reach will require meaningful and effective actions and commitment from all countries, taking into account different approaches, through the development of clear national pathways. “

The statement also added an important caveat for large emerging economies like India that have been pushing for money and technology to move away from coal: including finance and technology.

The press release lacked specific financial commitments necessary to persuade developing countries to make the energy transition, in particular to phase out coal.

But in a first for the G20, members agreed to take action to reduce emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. “We recognize that methane emissions represent a significant contribution to climate change and recognize, depending on national circumstances, that its reduction may be one of the fastest, most feasible and cost-effective ways to limit climate change and its impacts, ”they wrote. .
