England to demand NHS workers to be vaccinated by April

All frontline health workers in England must be vaccinated against Covid-19 by next spring to keep their jobs, Britain’s Health Secretary said on Tuesday, a move that employers and unions say could exacerbate staff shortages.

“We need to avoid preventable damage and protect NHS patients, protect NHS colleagues and, of course, protect the NHS itself,” Health Secretary Sajid Javid told Parliament, referring to National Health Service. He added that about 90 percent of employees in the service had received at least two doses of the vaccine.

The measure, which is subject to parliamentary approval, is due to enter into force on April 1. Exemptions will be available for people medically prevented from getting vaccinated and for health workers who have no direct contact with patients.

This delay is intended to ensure that workers who do not wish to be vaccinated remain in post during the winter, when the pressure on the overworked health services of the country is likely to be particularly acute.

Mr Javid said he has decided not to make the flu shot mandatory at this time.

The English health service employs around 1.3 million workers, although not all are on the front lines. Around 80,000 to 100,000 NHS workers nationwide remain unvaccinated against Covid, according to Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers, an organization of members of the NHS hospital, mental health, community services and paramedics.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can make their own decisions on the matter and have so far not made any proposals.

Mandatory vaccination is also a sensitive issue in the United States, and the Biden administration is pushing to introduce a Coronavirus vaccine mandate for large companies.

In Britain, one of the main concerns is that people reluctant to get vaccinated will quit their jobs and worsen staff shortages in a health service under acute pressure and expecting pressure. increased as winter sets in.

People working in nursing homes must be vaccinated from Thursday. Some are believed to have quit their jobs and instead chose to work in the National Health Service.

Mr Hopson said that while there was a risk that unvaccinated workers could infect patients and colleagues, staff shortages also posed a danger to public health.

“The problem for both social services and the NHS is that we run these insanely hot systems on very, very fine margins,” he told the BBC. “We both have around 90,000 to 100,000 vacancies. “

“We are completely dependent on our staff to currently do extra shifts in order to do the work that needs to be done,” he added, “hence the loss of a significant number of employees, especially given of the pressures that the two systems are currently under, is a real, real problem.

The unions have issued more categorical warnings.

“The destruction of this vaccine will exacerbate the already overwhelming staffing crisis we face in the NHS and ambulance services,” said Rachel Harrison, national official for the GMB union. “Both operate under extreme pressure, after a decade of austerity and cuts, with an exhausted and demoralized workforce fearful of what will come as we go through winter.”
