Just left halfway through another annoying, disappointing and dangerous night at a DSP show, this time with Lukas Nelson at the Academy of Music. I couldn’t stay because the Academy, DSP, and the city failed to uphold the mask’s mandate as well as common sense fire safety laws by letting unmasked people dance in the aisles.

As a huge fan of live music, it saddens me to say that it’s time to stop it all again. It’s a dangerous prank to check vaccination cards and IDs, but don’t provide any mask warrant application inside. Again, this seems like a short-sighted decision that puts profits before safety. It is extremely predictable that people on a show like this will test the law. It is in everyone’s interest to apply it.

Personally, I’m done with live music, and a lot of people reading this will feel the same, as will the friends and followers of many people out there who will also share their concern. Staff get yelled at when trying to enforce the law. It is unfair and inefficient to ask them. Private security services must be hired and they must react immediately to any breach.

In a few minutes, everything gets out of hand. But I haven’t seen any effort to reduce the violations. What we have now are events that end up serving only the selfish and the immature who are more than happy to sacrifice the safety of others for their own sake. Responsible citizens must step back while the reckless advance.

After an equally horrific fiasco at the Pines this summer, it’s clear that we don’t have what it takes to responsibly stage live music. I know this poses a great danger to musicians and venues, but choosing to do it in a dangerous way is not an option for me. Stop everything or stop with the absurd masquerade of a vaccination and mask requirement.

Just run it as it is, with no real concern for public safety, and have hospitals staffed to handle the outcome.
