“Be revolutionary,” UMass tells us. Well, UMass athletic director Ryan Bamford is expected to be and appoint Kevin Kelley as the new football coach at UMass Amherst.

Kevin is a radical. His kicking team rarely, almost always on the outside kicks the ball and goes for two runs after a touchdown. Most “oddly”, the four of them always go there (maybe there is an exception). Players often lateralize the ball and the quarterback delivers safe mid-level throws that maximize yards after the catch.

Its methods are very unorthodox, dare I say it “revolutionary”, but it works.

Under Kelley, Pulaski Academy, a small private school in Little Rock, Arkansas, has won football matches. His record was, and it’s not a typo, 216-29-1. From 2008 to 2020, the Pulaski Academy won eight state titles by overturning conventional football rules against bigger, stronger and more talented football teams. Isn’t that what UMass needs right now?

Patriots coach Bill Belichick praised Kelley as one of the best high school coaches in the country. If Belichick approves, Kelley probably deserves a chance at UMass. Who knows, maybe the ‘Hooded One’ could walk past McGuirk Alumni Stadium on a Saturday afternoon to see Coach Kelley lead the Minuteman.

Getting Kelley to UMass will be tough. He left Pulaski in 2020 for Presbyterian College in South Carolina. The team are currently 2-8, 0-7 in conference, a record indicating they do not award football scholarships.

But Kelley would be okay; it takes time for players and special teams to adjust to its heterodoxy. Playing differently is weird, scary, and inherently risky, but it’s revolutionary.

Also, keep in mind that Kelley’s two-game winning team is one more than UMass so far. Even if he came and failed at UMass, what’s the downside? We have tried everything else. Kelley’s methods, or insanity, are data driven, which would work well for UMass’ top ranked computer program. Imagine the collaboration?

Bamford is expected to pay Kelley $ 100,000 per win and nothing if the team loses. Maybe in 10 years, UMass would beat Alabama for a national title. It would be revolutionary.
