So Naftali Bennett, the new Prime Minister, took a risk and took a risk. He said boosters were going to be the savior and the way to fight the Fourth Wave. But when he started the recall campaign, there really was no science on its effectiveness.

So what happened?

What we have seen, over time, is a dramatic reduction in infections, hospitalizations and deaths among those who received the booster. We have gone from over 11,000 new cases per day at the peak to a few dozen today. Prior to the start of the recall campaign, we also saw increased hospitalizations among vaccinated people with weakened immunity, but now the overwhelming majority of hospitalizations are unvaccinated people.

What are the lessons of the recall campaign?

Israel was able to achieve the goal of dealing with the Covid and the Fourth Wave, while keeping the economy open, which the government attributes to the recall campaign.

Now there is this issue of Israel giving everyone a third vaccine when there are people in other countries who haven’t had a vaccine yet. There have been a few doctors and public health officials who, like the World Health Organization, have said that the priority should be to vaccinate more of the world with at least one dose, and we are never going to get rid of Covid until it happens.

But in a way, the Israeli government kind of justified the administration of the third dose by saying, well, look, we’re ahead of the rest of the world and we were that testing ground. We have shown that it works and we have provided a service in this case. And the rest of the world is following us now. So there is a sort of sense of justification that the recall campaign has worked, especially now that other countries are following Israel.

How is life there now?

People have kind of stopped talking about the pandemic. There was a time when it was just obsessive, when you couldn’t talk about anything else. But now people have sort of accepted that it’s part of life. They’ve started hugging and kissing again, and they’re still doing it.
