As federal regulators review a request for expanded eligibility Of Pfizer-BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine boosts to all adults, three states decided last week to expand access on their own.

Colorado, New Mexico and California allow adults to seek boosters, provided individuals are at least six months after the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, or two months after the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

“I was very frustrated with the convoluted messages from the CDC and the FDA,” Colorado Governor Jared Polis said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday, also referring to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. . than the Food and Drug Administration.

Federal regulators have said adults who have received the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines are eligible for a booster if they are 65 or older, or if they are at increased risk due to medical conditions or location. where they work or live. People who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which is only available to adults, are eligible. Those who receive boosters can select one of three brands of vaccine.

On Tuesday, Pfizer and BioNTech asked the FDA expand eligibility for their boosters to all adults. If regulators approve this request, it would make official what health authorities say they already see it happening frequently – that many people appear to be receiving callbacks, whether or not they are technically eligible. In mid-August, President Biden announced his intention to make boosters available for all adults, but the start of the campaign was delayed after regulators insisted they needed more time to review the data.

Mr Polis signed an executive order on boosters this week, citing the significant spread of the virus across Colorado. As of Saturday, the state’s daily average hospitalizations had increased 13% in the past two weeks to around 1,500, according to a New York Times database.

As winter sets in, Mr Polis said he wanted to protect residents as well as ski tourists.

“Everyone should receive the booster after six months,” he said, stressing his ability to help with personal protection. “That’s why my parents got it,” he added, as did him.

A growing body of early global research has shown that vaccines available in the United States have has remained very protective against the worst outcomes of the disease over time.

A number of published studies show that their protection against infection, with or without symptoms, has decreased. Public health experts say that doesn’t mean vaccines don’t work. But the importance of diminishing efficiency – and if that suggests that all adults should be eligible for a booster – is still to debate.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a former FDA chief who now sits on Pfizer’s board of directors, was blunt on “Face the Nation” in his criticism of the Biden administration’s approach to recall recommendations. “I think the confusing message around boosters may end up being one of the biggest missed opportunities in this pandemic,” he said.

“Anyone who is eligible for a recall, and most Americans are probably eligible at this point, should go out and look for it,” he added.

And on “Fox News Sunday,” Dr. Vivek Murthy, the US surgeon general, attempted to distinguish between acknowledging the movements of these three states and defending the slower approaches of federal regulators.

“What they’re going to do is take a close look at the data,” he said of the FDA, to make sure the booster is safe and effective for people currently ineligible.

He continued, “Ultimately millions of people can be boosted right now and we want them to be, because it will extend and improve the protection they have already received from the vaccine.”
