In the United States, coronavirus cases in children are up 32% from about two weeks ago, a peak that comes as the country rushes to vaccinate children before the winter break, said pediatricians.

More than 140,000 children tested positive for the coronavirus between November 11 and 18, up from 107,000 in the week ending November 4, according to a declaration Monday from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association.

Those cases accounted for about a quarter of the country’s caseload for the week, the statement said. Children under the age of 18 make up about 22 percent of American population.

“Is there any cause for concern? Absolutely, ”said Dr. Sean O’Leary, vice-chair of the academy’s infectious disease committee, in an interview Monday night. “What explains the increase in the number of children is that there is an overall increase in cases. “

Children represent a higher percentage of overall cases since vaccines became widely available for adults, said Dr O’Leary, who is also a professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the University of Colorado. Colorado Children’s Hospital.

Although children are less likely to develop serious illness from Covid than adults, they are still at risk and can pass the virus to adults as well. Experts have warned that children must be vaccinated to protect against possible symptoms of long-Covid, Multisystem inflammatory syndrome and hospitalization.

At the end of October, around 8,300 American children aged 5 to 11 were hospitalized with Covid and at least 172 have died, out of more than 3.2 million hospitalizations and 740,000 deaths in total, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

At a press conference on Friday, Dr Janet Woodcock, acting commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, said the hospitalizations and deaths among 5 to 11 year olds were “really surprising.”

Dr O’Leary said it hasn’t helped that many schools have relaxed their security protocols in recent months.

“So any protection that might happen in schools is not there,” he said.

Immunizing young children is likely to help keep schools open. Outbreaks of the virus forced around 2,300 schools to close between early August and October, affecting more than 1.2 million students, according to data presented at a CDC meeting November 2.

Dr O’Leary said he was particularly concerned about the increase in the number of cases among children during the holiday season.

With the stagnation of the rate of inoculations in American adults, states rush encourage vaccinations for children ages 5 to 11, who became eligible earlier this month after the CDC authorized Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for this age group. In May, the federal government recommended make the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine available to children ages 12 to 15. Teens 16 and older became eligible in most states a month earlier.

The White House estimated on November 10 that nearly a million young children had been vaccinated; 28 million are eligible. They receive one third of the adult dose, with two injections three weeks apart.

All data to date indicates that vaccines are much safer than a bout of Covid, even for children.

Yet about three in ten parents say they certainly not get vaccinated for their Child from 5 to 11 years old, according to a recent survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Only about three in ten parents said they would vaccinate their child “right away”.
