You may not know Aulcie Perry’s name, but in Israel the former basketball center is a legend – like “Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar reunited in one,” as one reporter puts it sportsman in the documentary “Aulcie”. Through interviews, stock footage and illustrated footage, the film, directed by Dani Menkin, offers a delicate biography of the famous overseas athlete whose career was ultimately derailed by heroin addiction. .

Born in Newark, NJ, the 6-foot-10 Perry has always seen basketball as his calling. The hoop dreams propelled him to the NBA, but after being quickly ruled out from the Knicks, Perry took a chance: he accepted a spot with Maccabi Tel Aviv. The team proved to be strong and Perry led the Maccabi to European Champions Cup victories in 1977 and 1981, before drug addiction and a trafficking charge forced him to put an end to his remarkable career. .

There is an infectious thrill in the film’s portrayal of its subject’s accomplishments, especially his whirlwind romance with Israeli model Tami Ben Ami. But when it comes to Perry’s wrestling moments, “Aulcie” stumbles. Schmaltzy’s music and blurry images strike a chord, and Perry’s missing shot sequences on empty land are frequently deployed as a superficial visual metaphor for hardship. The film also refuses to engage in the evolution of Israeli politics or culture and in Perry’s place, opting instead for a melodramatic portrayal of a star who fell too soon.
