Gunfire at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday resulted from an “accidental discharge” of a gun, officials said, but it prompted vacationers to flee and move on. shelter because some thought there was an armed man inside one of the terminals.

The airport said on Twitter that there was no shooter and no danger to passengers or employees, and that no one was injured. At around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, there was an “accidental discharge” in the airport security check area, the airport said.

The authorities gave a “green light” and resumed normal operations about two hours later, said the airport.

The panic occurred during one of the busiest times of the year for air travel, when millions of people are expected to fly on Thanksgiving. Transport security administration said wednesday that the plane trip this Thanksgiving was should approach prepandemic levels.

Authorities did not say how many shots were fired or who was responsible. Sgt. Jarius Daugherty, a spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department, said officers were “working to determine the circumstances surrounding” the gun discharge.

The Federal Aviation Administration said all flights departing from the airport were grounded for 35 minutes.

Some passengers shared on social networks that they had to leave their departing flights to be reviewed. Videos also showed that those who had to get off planes had to stay on the tarmac while waiting for more information.

In times of confusion, the airport seemed descend into chaos. Images posted on social media showed part of the airport emptied, with lost suitcases, a spilled drink and an overturned cart among those things left behind.

Outside the airport, people gathered in the departures area, block some traffic as passengers waited for answers.

Mark Hager, Associate Professor at Arizona State University, tweeted that the airport was in “pandemonium” while he was driving there.

Adriana Loya, a reporter for 12 News in Arizona, said on twitter that no one knew where to go. Airport workers were telling passengers there was “an active gunman” near baggage claim in Terminal T, she said.

“I just ran in a stampede out of the Delta Terminal,” another eyewitness, Matthew Schwartz, tweeted, adding: “I heard gunshots, then people ran. I helped a woman get up.

Another passenger, Amelia Swaggert, on her way to Atlanta said in a tweet that she “immediately heard screams” when she got off her flight.

“Everyone was going through the terminal and we are now on the tarmac,” she said.
