Arkansas joined Colorado, California and New Mexico on Monday in expanding access to Covid-19 boosters, ahead federal regulators who are about to make a decision on expanding eligibility.

Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson said during a press conference Monday that he had asked the state’s health department to issue new guidelines on recalls to allow all adults to get one, provided they follow the schedule rules. The move made Arkansas the last state to issue a boosters decision ahead of a federal decision.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the Arkansas Department of Health said he had updated his recommendations and inform health care providers that they can administer the boosters to an enlarged pool of adults.

“What we are seeing is that we want more people to get their booster injection and that is somewhat confusing and limiting in terms of eligibility,” Mr Hutchinson said, adding that “we are changing that” .

However, a spokeswoman for the governor’s office said Mr Hutchinson did not intend to issue an executive order to extend eligibility for the recall.

According to Department of Health guidelines, adults in Arkansas are now eligible for the vaccine booster if it has been at least six months since their second injection of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or at least two months since. that they received the Johnson & Johnson single dose. vaccine.

A growing body of early global research has shown that vaccines stay very protective against hospitalization and death, but their effectiveness against infection decreases over time. Public health experts say that doesn’t mean vaccines don’t work.

In mid-August, President Biden announced his intention to make boosters available for all adults, but the start of the campaign was delayed after regulators said they needed more time to review the data. Last week, Pfizer and BioNTech requested that Food and Drug Administration Expands Recall Eligibility to All Adults, a request that the agency should grant before the winter holidays.

Prior to a formal recommendation from federal authorities, several other states took different approaches to expanding eligibility for recalls.

Governors of Colorado and New Mexico decrees signed last week expanding eligibility to all adults. In CaliforniaDr Tomás J. Aragón, the state’s director of public health, released a letter last week saying eligibility is open to anyone 18 years of age or older.

Authorities in New York and West Virginia on Monday encouraged all adults to get the recall, but halted before a formal policy change. New York City health officials told health providers to give booster shots to all adults who want them, a plea echoed by Governor Kathy Hochul. In West Virginia, Governor Jim Justice said adults should “absolutely get” a booster.
