White House press secretary Jen psaki got the third degree of journalists on a joke that the president Joe biden made last week about the press not behaving well, an overreaction after four years of The Former Guy.

Last week in a photoshoot with the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, the president joked that “the Indian press behaves much better than the American press” and that Americans are likely to overthrow people.

“I think that with your permission, we should not answer questions because they will not ask any questions on the point,” the president added.

This exchange – which took place before reporters were brought into the Oval Office on Friday and was captured through ABP News – was a hot topic during Monday’s daily briefing.

No less than three different reporters toasted Psaki over the remark, which Psaki explained by insisting that President Biden answer reporters’ questions – and answered questions that day – and contextualized the remark as a minor shot at a narrow spot.

Well, I would point out, first of all, that he answered questions on Friday and answered questions today.

And I think what he said was that they are not always “on point”. Now I know that’s not something anyone wants to hear here. But what I think he was saying is, you know, today he might want to talk about COVID vaccines; some of the questions were about that. He might want to talk about it – and some of the questions aren’t always on the topic he’s talking about that day. I don’t think it was meant to be a blow to members of the media – the people he responded to today and Friday as well.

Fox News’ Jacqui Heinrich followed by Biden’s remarks as a commentary on press freedom around the world, stating: “The president said the Indian press has performed ‘better’ than the American press, but the Indian press is ranked 142nd in the world, according to Reporters Without Borders, for press freedoms ”and asking“ How does he say that about the American press compared to the Indian press? “

“Well, I would just like to tell you that having now worked for the president – assuming that role for nine months, having seen that he answered questions from the press over 140 times, including today and Friday – that he certainly respects the role of the press, the role of the freedom of the pre… free press. He – we make sure we have the press with us, of course, when we travel; that we press with us for sprays abroad – in foreign capitals; and we will continue. And I think that should be a testament to his commitment to press freedom around the world, ”Psaki said.

The answers were delivered with confidence and skill and were probably about the best that Psaki could safely do. Journalists are right here, which makes the line of questioning difficult to deal with. Biden is right that reporters very rarely stick to the desired topic – but they don’t have a duty to. They are indeed sometimes likely to ask questions charge Where dishonest or who contain bullshit Where disinformation – just like their freedom to do. That’s what the answers are for.

I think a fair interpretation of Psaki’s response is that Biden made a light joke for an unvarnished moment and despite his occasional beating, he has the same respect for the institution of journalism as most normal presidents.

The constraints of the position prevented her from opposing this joke to the last occupant of the White House, who waged a four-year campaign of violent rhetoric against the press that literally inspired multiple home-made bombings, and was a key part of his incitement to insurgency.

None of this means anything less than that is beautiful and dandy, but it does mean a little perspective is in order. Bristling at a shit question is not the same as declaring the free press the enemy of the people.

Jen Psaki is not free to say, “Calm down, people. That white mushroom supremacist whisperer almost got some of you killed, ”and not just because Trump denies having a little mushroom cock. It’s also because Trump shouldn’t be anyone’s stallion.

Which also means that President Biden must remember that he rules in the shadow of this gallows which was erected to lynch. Mike pence, and the bleach bottle people were told to inject, and the very thin tiki torches, and yes, homemade bombs and other pipe bombs, and realize that a little polish is in order.

Watch above via the White House.
