My son, Tsonga, Gasquet and Simon have not reached this level and time is running out.

Tsonga and Simon are both 36 (Simon will be 37 in December), and Monfils and Gasquet are 35 years old. They met as the best junior players and often trained and traveled together.

“I’ve known these guys since I was 11 or 12,” Tsonga said over the phone from his home in Switzerland. “We grew up together. We shared hotel rooms, a school, training at the center of the federation. I remember playing Gilles in an under 12 tournament. What I remember the most, c is that he was half my height and older than I. And I still think I lost the love and the love.

All four of them were, at one point, ranked in the World Top 10 on the ATP Tour. Tsonga reached a career high No.5 in 2012 and finished second behind Djokovic at the 2008 Australian Open. He also reached the semi-finals there in 2010, as well as the semi-finals twice at Wimbledon and two times at Roland Garros. He has 18 ATP titles in his career. Embarrassed by illness and injuries, including a bout with energy-draining sickle cell disease, Tsonga has limited his game this year.

Monfils continues to entertain the crowds with his acrobatic game, which features jumps in the air, balls hit in the legs and a smile that beams in the stadiums. Two-time vice-champion of the Paris Masters, Monfils was ranked No. 6 in 2016. He has reached the final of an ATP tournament in each of the past 17 years. For him, being the best athlete was not always enough.

“Maybe I’m stronger physically, but tennis is so much more,” said Monfils. “Mentally, it’s more difficult. I was number 6 in the world. Those five guys in front of me were stronger than me mentally, but I was stronger than millions of other people.

Simon peaked in career No.6 in 2009, but is currently ranked just outside the Top 100. He reached the quarter-finals in Moscow two weeks ago and has played in the Paris Masters every year since 2006 and reached the semi-finals in 2012.

A former semi-finalist at Wimbledon and the US Open, Gasquet has finished the year in the World Top 10 four times. Once ranked No. 7, he reached the semi-finals of the Paris Masters in 2007.
