It may not be widely known, but the White House chief of staff Ron klain is Jewish. And like all chiefs of staff, he plays a central role in managing the ins and outs of the Biden White House. And because the president Joe biden mental acuity is so often questioned by conservative critics that Klain is often referred to as the one responsible for its administration.

Yet Klain’s portrayal of a “puppet master,” as is often the case, echoes an ugly anti-Semitic trope that goes back the ages.

Fox News Host Sean hannity echoed that idea Monday night by slamming Klain. Whether intentional or not, the use of such language has become all too common within the Republican Party and should be removed.

While Hannity, the host lamented the rise in inflation and the crisis in the supply chain. He then referred to Klain as a “great puppeteer”, echoing the anti-Semitic trope of Jewish control of institutions, including government.

“According to Biden, the ‘great puppeteer’ Ron Klain, this is a high class problem that we don’t have to worry about,” Hannity said, referring to Klain. approve a tweet declaring that the current economic problems are “high class problems”.

There is plenty of evidence that Hannity is far from being an anti-Semite, so it is entirely reasonable to accept that he had no idea that Klain is Jewish, nor that the bad story of this particular rhetoric flourishes. .

In a statement to Mediaite on Tuesday, Hannity strongly rejected the idea that his comment was anti-Semitic:

First of all, I never heard in my life that it was a trope. Second, I have no idea of Ron Klain’s faith. Third, no one in the cable news today has been more pro-Israel than me. I am friends with former prime ministers Benjamin netanyahu and Ehud Barak, as well as former prime ministers Shimon Peres and Ariel sharon. I have traveled to Israel many times over the years, been in the Gaza tunnels, broadcast live from border towns in the midst of conflict, made two trips to the Old City and I showed the world the huge security issues involving the tiny country of Israel which I believe is America’s greatest ally. No one is more passionate about Israel than I am. Any suggestion to the contrary is an absolutely horrible and utterly slanderous lie. Instead of attacking the country’s most outspoken pro-Israel host, the media crowd should join me in condemning the virulent anti-Semitism of some members of the Democratic House. My point was that President Joe Biden is not calling the shots at the White House. It’s just the predictable laziness of the left-wing media.

While Hannity’s steadfast support for Israel is welcome, he does not give anyone a pass to engage in anti-Semitic tropes, whatever their intention.

In addition, anti-Semitism must be unequivocally denounced in all its forms, whether on the far left, the far right, radical Islam and other sources. Staying alert to the anti-Semitism of only a few House Democrats, including “The Squad,” allows these tropes to spread to the right.

I can only hope that despite Hannity’s statement he removes the trope from his commentary.

He is not alone. Republican lawmakers have used similar language describing Klain’s influence at Biden’s White House.

“We got the impression from our members who attended meetings there that he’s kind of the guy behind the curtain,” noted senatorial minority whip Jean Thune (R-SD) earlier this year. Leader of the minority in the Senate Mitch mcconnell (R-KY) made a similar comment about Klain controlling the administration behind the scenes.

In doing so, Biden’s critics are turning to anti-Semitic tropes, as in the case of Hannity on Monday night. It was not the first time that Hannity called Klain a “puppeteer” – he did it October 14. This is also not the first time that a Fox host has called a Jew a puppeteer – Raymond Arroyo did it with reference to Mike Bloomberg Last year.

And while they may not even notice it and are not anti-Semitic, this column should be a friendly reminder to them that they need to be aware of how damaging this language is to me and my peers in the Jewish community. “Klain” is a common Jewish surname.

Kosher ways of characterizing Klain would be “Biden’s brain,” “powerful player,” and “very influential.” These sentiments describe Klain’s stature as someone whose contribution is invaluable to Biden. It’s different from suggesting that Klain controls Biden per se. It’s one thing to be influential, it’s another to be in control. Republicans would be wise to take this into account in their criticism of the administration.
