So how did I become a huge Michigan fan, and how did that translate into the state of Michigan losing every game for the rest of human time, and maybe beyond?

I spoke with Duncan on the phone this week, and she told me that creating a sports fan has a number of requirements, including specific geography, family affiliations, and the sense of kinship that the you can have by being a fan of a team. She said that in many ways the sports fandom “forms similarly to other types of identities, where you start to associate with people who have something in common. And then you can feel it. support from them You get that sense of victory when your team wins, or that sense of defeat when your team loses.

In other words, if Duncan is right, I became a Michigan fan because I moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, so I was surrounded by Michigan fans, a kind of family that I have. created a kinship around college life, classes and – you guessed it – Michigan sports. We socialized at Michigan games and created bonds and relationships centered around watching Michigan sports that have stood the test of time.

And if Michigan and school sports were the inner group – the group that I found kinship and affiliation with – Michigan’s rivals were the outer group. Of course, the State of Michigan and the University of Michigan are both public universities in the State of Michigan, but I have not found any kinship with the people of East Lansing (and, I presume, they do not. have not done it with me).

During our conversation, Duncan explained how our ties to our political identity are significantly similar – our political understanding is largely based on where we are and who we socialize with.

“When your political party wins, like when your team wins, you get that feeling of winning yourself. Or when your team loses, you feel that loss the same way. She added that based on her research in sports and politics, these kinship ties also have an impact on how we perceive bad news about our favorite teams.

“You know it will take more than just facts to believe that your athletic trainer hero actually looked away while sexual abuse was occurring. Or it will take more than just facts for you to realize that your political party is not going in the same direction or sharing your same values, ”she said.
