Dr J. Donald Boudreau, Acting Director of the Institute for Health Sciences Education at McGill University in Montreal, said, also in a tribute, that the concept of “medicine” had helped develop should be to bring patients back to a sense of well-being, where well-being is based on the achievement of goals and goals in life.

Dr Cassell was born Eric Jonathan Goldstein on August 29, 1928 in New York City to Hyman and Anne (Lake) Goldstein and raised in Queens. His father was a civil engineer at the post office. Dr Cassell said he and his brother changed their last name to approximate the original pronunciation of that of their immigrant grandfather, before it was changed when he arrived from Russia.

Dr Cassell received a BA from Queens College in 1950, an MA from Columbia University, and a medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. He was a captain in the Army Medical Corps from 1956 to 1958 in France and completed his internship and residency at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.

In 1971, following an article he had written, he was recruited by the Task Force on Death at the Hastings Center.

“It literally changed my life, broadened my horizons, pushed me to become literate and gave shape to a genetic predisposition to philosophy” Dr Cassell wrote on its website. “I started to wonder if a doctor could really treat patients in a useful and special way successfully because they were dying.”

“Now we know,” he added, “that not only can you, but you should.”

He directed the Ethics and Values ​​in Medicine program at Cornell University School of Medicine from 1981 to 1986. He retired from his practice of internal medicine in 1998.

Besides his son, from his marriage to Joan Cassell, which ended in divorce, he is survived by a daughter, Justine, from this marriage; his wife, Patricia Owens; her stepchildren, Margaret, Theresa, Shirley, James and Rebecca Owens; a little girl ; two step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.
