In a year of dashed expectations, a season that included an epic collapse in August in which the team lost a significant lead in the division, the Mets had a burst of joy on Tuesday when Noah Syndergaard, formerly an ace for the team, was able to make his return to the mound after two years lost due to injury.

Syndergaard has shown some of its previous brilliance. He started Game 2 of a doubles program against the Miami Marlins, shot 9 of his 10 shots for strikes, struck out two batters on strikes and hit 96 miles per hour on the radar gun. The home Mets won both games against the Marlins.

“I felt good,” Syndergaard told reporters after the game. “It was amazing to come back there.”

Syndergaard’s last appearance was on September 29, 2019. During his two-year absence, he had to deal with an ulnar collateral ligament tear in his pitching elbow, which required surgery Tommy John, as well as a revolutionary case of Covid-19.

The excitement over the return of the great right-hander who once captivated crowds at Citi Field, helping the team reach the 2015 World Series and looking like a future superstar in 2016, was offset by the team’s announcement that another star pitcher, Jacob deGrom, would be shut down for the remainder of the season to allow him to continue to recover from an elbow injury.

While deGrom hosted bullpen sessions and the Mets were thrilled with his progress, there was no reason to bring him back this year after the team was eliminated from the playoffs.

“Everyone is fully on board,” said manager Luis Rojas. “This is the right thing.”

In a season in which he initially looked like he could set many records, DeGrom ended the year with a final row that included a 7-2 record, a 1.08 earned-run average and 146 strikeouts in the game. stick in 92 innings. He made his fourth all-star team, but the elbow injury took away what seemed like a great chance for him to win his third Cy Young Award.

DeGrom, who has signed until 2023 with a 2024 club option, will return to the Mets next season. Syndergaard, who has said he plans to pitch at least once more this season, also hopes he will be back, despite his next free agency.

“I’m pretty confident we’ll come to a deal and I’ll be launching here next year,” Syndergaard said. “New York has a special place in my heart and always will be.”
