Enrollment in New York City’s public school system has fallen by about 50,000 students since fall 2019, the Department of Education said on Friday, the latest example of the deep disturbance the pandemic has had on public education across the country.

The 4.5% drop is likely due to a number of factors, including parents choosing to home-teach their children temporarily or long-term, families leaving town during the pandemic, and some parents delaying the start of school altogether. school of their young children.

New York City lost by far the largest number of students in its recent history between fall 2019 and fall 2020, when about 38,000 students left the system.

But between fall 2020 and now, enrollment has fallen by about 13,000 students, or about 1%, a rate that reflects the prepandemic declines of 2018 and 2019.

Los Angeles and Chicago, which are home to the largest neighborhoods in the United States after New York, have lost a greater percentage of students this year.

There are currently just over one million children enrolled in all of New York City’s public schools, including charter schools. About 938,000 of these students are enrolled in traditional district schools, according to preliminary data from the Department of Education.

Although New York City is by far the largest school district in the country, enrollment has been declining steadily for years, in part due to the departure of families from the city in search of more affordable housing.

The losses over the past year have been concentrated in non-charter district schools, which have lost an estimated 17,000 students. They have experienced a drop in enrollment of more than 60,000 students, or about 6%, since the start of the pandemic. Charters have steadily increased registrations for most of the past decade, but registrations have declined slightly this year compared to last year.

Daily attendance for students enrolled in city schools this fall is slightly below the typical average, at just under 90 percent. The education ministry previously declined to explain how it calculated that rate, but said on Friday it was following 869,000 students under its regular attendance system, excluding most children. preschool and other early childhood programs.

Unlike many districts across the country, New York has seen an increase in enrollment for young children: the city has added seats to its pre-K program.

School districts across the country are grappling with enrollment declines made worse by the pandemic’s profound effects on public education. A recent New York Times Analysis found that about 340,000 kindergarten students nationwide did not show up for virtual or in-person classes during the pandemic.
