Why Meghan mccain to get a job written for the Daily Mail when she burned to View, instead of a plum hosting gig on cable news?

It wasn’t because of the ratings. Meghan McCain is good at television. Very good, and particularly in a setting like View, where his commentary plays – and struggles with – a herd of co-hosts.

But her well-known reputation of being a hard personality to work with, day in and day out, has kept television executives at bay. It’s not just news gleaned from leaked anonymous gossip pages. A number of industry insiders have made it clear to Mediaite that McCain is known to be difficult to work with, which has kept TV executives at bay.

This bad press is not unique to McCain. There are a number of television personalities – from Lawrence O’Donnell To Scott Pelley – who have developed reputations of similar attitudes. But McCain returned to the limelight this week, talking about what seems to be one of her favorite topics… herself. And its future in broadcast or cable television is now a question on the minds of many industry executives.

The former star of View recently posted a settling accounts audiobook which lambasted its co-hosts, its leaders and its treatment of what it called misogynistic media. She also revealed very frankly – and courageously – her own struggles with postpartum depression, which she says helped bring her last year to View a living hell.

Meghan McCain’s reputation for being difficult to work with is well known. She even spoke at length about the brutal coverage she received in the tabloid press. (Let’s not forget that if McCain has one superpower – beyond her last name – it’s because she can play the victim card.)

McCain pointed out a number of blind items clearly fled to escalate internal quarrels between her Seen the co-hosts as well as the network executives. McCain’s talent was his role as a foil to the conventional wisdom expressed relentlessly by his co-hosts, actual caricatures of liberal media prejudice, with condescension and a complete lack of conscience. When McCain calls Joy BĂ©har and Whoopi goldberg for mistreating her, there is ample evidence to support it, both on air and in reports of the off-air clashes. Looking back, it’s particularly shocking that McCain’s Behar treatment got a pass.

The tensions are not exaggerated. According to a network executive familiar with the inner workings of the ABC show, reports of bitterness may have been underestimated in the press. But that tension is a big part of why the series was ranked so well.

McCain did very well as foil. That’s another reason, according to another cable news official, McCain probably won’t be getting his own show anytime soon. She would also not be part of a panel of like-minded people. It does well when it stands out, and that makes it a compelling TV.

So what happens to Meghan? Executives leave a lot of eyeballs on the table by not bringing it on board. A development manager would be wise to pair it, with the Seen, with a group of liberal co-hosts.

While McCain has decried the mistreatment she received from Goldberg and Behar, she owes them a lot of gratitude. Teaming up with McCain almost made her a likeable figure – if one can feel bad for Violet Beauregard Veruca Salt falling through the giant Golden Goose spawning chute – but more importantly, she demonstrated her appeal to viewers.

Having a bad reputation in the news is not a rarity. The number of on-air talent, TV hosts and presenters who are not pain in the ass is terribly small. The performative nature of being on TV – combined with constant criticism – often brings out the worst in people. Add to that the curious combination of thin skin and massive ego that comes with the kind of person drawn to a career in front of a camera? This poisonous stew of character traits rarely adds to magnanimity, grace, and humility.

Either way, McCain remains an interesting TV personality, whether she is promoting her own victimization or fighting her liberal foils. For the sake of an interesting TV, let’s hope it returns to the screen soon – but pray for the executive producer who has to manage this set.
