Jon Gruden resigned Monday night as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders following a New York Times report that he sent racist, homophobic and misogynistic emails between 2010 and 2018.

The media coverage of Gruden – who is white and has already been criticized following a the Wall Street newspaper report on October 8 about an email he sent in 2010 to the executive director of the NFL Players Association DeMaurice Smith, which is black, which included a racial trope – should not stop at Gruden himself as these emails were among the 650,000 emails that were part of The NFL investigation from the alleged toxic workplace of the Washington football team.

If it was fair to hold Gruden accountable for what was not one-off, but rather a role model between 2010 and 2018, when he became head coach of the Raiders after accepting a contract as 10 years worth $ 100 million, more to be kept. responsible for conduct worse than e-mail content.

Washington football team owner Dan Snyder, of which net worth is $ 4 billion and which the team is worth $ 4.2 billion, apparently did nothing to stem what would have been a toxic workplace for female employees, including the cheerleaders on the team. Instead of forcing Snyder to sell the team, the NFL slapped him on the wrist by fining him $ 10 million and allowing his wife to take over day-to-day operations. And the NFL allowed Snyder to buy out minority shareholders, which allowed him to own 100% of his team. Gruden was at ESPN at the time he sent these emails, which were not to be part of the WFT investigation.

The media should press the commissioner Roger goodell on why Snyder got a slap on the wrist, when Gruden ended up being the downfall guy, and he should ask Goodell why there was no written report behind those investigating the WFT. In addition, the press should demand to see all emails and documents from and reviewed as part of the investigation.

Speaking of double standard, Richard sherman, Tyreek Hill, Kareem Hunting have a history of suspected domestic violence, but these star players are still on the pitch rather than out of the league.

The press might ask the league why there hasn’t been a persistent awareness campaign, similar to that in support of Black Lives Matter, regarding domestic violence, which is a major problem in black women. And the press should continually ask Goodell why players who commit or are accused of domestic violence aren’t banned from the NFL. It is inexplicable that these players are still in the NFL while Gruden is not.

While on the subject of double standards, as the founder of Outkick Clay Travis rappers who will perform at the Super Bowl pointed out Tuesday in response to Gruden’s resignation – Eminem, Snoop dogg, Dr. DrĂ©, and Kendrick Lamar (in the same way Mary J. Blige) – have songs with “more offensive lyrics than Jon Gruden’s in his emails”.

“How does the NFL reconcile the difference in treatment? These are questions all sports media would ask if they were true journalists, ”Travis tweeted. A good point.

It is the press’s job to hold those in power sincerely accountable and to push for transparency. He did it with Gruden and now he should be doing it with the other aforementioned characters and those like them. Failure to do so would help and encourage double standards and corruption in the NFL.
