WASHINGTON – A bipartisan group of lawmakers on Monday lobbied Amazon’s chief executive on Monday to respond to allegations his executives provided a congressional investigation with false answers to questions about his private label products.

Amazon executives, including founder Jeff Bezos, told lawmakers the company did not review data from unique sellers on its site when it was planning and developing its own products. They also told the House Judiciary Committee that the company did not deliberately give its private label products an edge in search results.

Last week, Reuters reported that Amazon had strategically copied products from third-party merchants while expanding its business in India. Another publication, The Markup, reported a day later that the company’s private label products ranked better than competitors sold by merchants, even when third-party products scored higher.

“At best, this report confirms that Amazon officials misled the committee,” the group of five lawmakers said. “At worst, it shows that they may have lied to Congress in possible violation of federal criminal law.”

In the letter, lawmakers said they plan to return the case to the Justice Department for possible criminal investigation. Their dealings with Amazon were part of a longer investigation into the market power of the nation’s biggest tech companies.

“Amazon and its executives did not mislead the committee, and we have denied and sought to correct the record on the inaccurate news reports in question,” said Brooke Oberwetter, spokesperson for Amazon.

She said the company has a policy of prohibiting the use of individual merchant data in building private label products and that Amazon’s search results show “the items that customers will want to buy, that they will want to buy. are offered by Amazon or one of our sales partners. “
