A Wisconsin jury on Tuesday declared a woman not guilty of beating a state senator who recorded video of protesters during a Black Lives Matter protest last year.

The woman, Kerida O’Reilly, 34, of Madison, Wisconsin, was acquitted of the felony of battery and disorderly driving in connection with the June 24, 2020 episode, Mx. O’Reilly’s attorney, Jessa Nicholson Goetz, said Tuesday evening.

“I am extremely relieved to see that once everyone enters a courtroom, it doesn’t matter if you are a senator,” said Nicholson Goetz.

Mx. O’Reilly has been accused of attacking State Senator Tim Carpenter, a Democrat who represents the regions of Milwaukee, instigating other people during a Black Lives Matter protest to attack him.

After the protest, Senator Carpenter posted a 12-second video on Twitter, which showed two women charging towards him.

“Leave my phone alone,” the senator can be heard saying in the video.

“Delete it,” someone replies.

He said last year he was punched and kicked in the head, neck and ribs by eight or ten people. He was treated in a hospital for injuries to his head, neck, nose and ribs.

In a statement Wednesday, Senator Carpenter said he believes “that the right to free speech is important to our society so that we can engage with each other in the pursuit of a more ideal future for all. “.

“However, when protests turn violent,” he added, “it distracts attention from the motivations and message that make others see the possibility of change. When people are injured, there must be accountability for those actions. “

Mx. O’Reilly and a co-accused, Samantha Hamer, told court they were only trying to get Senator Carpenter to stop recording protests, The Associated Press reported. Senator Carpenter testified that he did not believe Mx. O’Reilly had hit him after others approached him, but he was knocked off balance by Mx. O’Reilly, the AP reported.

Ms Hamer made a strong plea in September for a violation of civil law for disorderly conduct, which is not a criminal charge, Ms Nicolson Goetz said.

The attack came as thousands of people across the country took part in the Black Lives Matter protests following the murder of George Floyd by police in May 2020.

In a maintenance last year, Senator Carpenter said he was working at the Wisconsin Capitol on the day of the protest. He got out of his car out of curiosity and ended up recording the demonstration. Senator Carpenter has also said he supports peaceful protests and the Black Lives Matter movement.

“I tried to tell them, ‘Why are you doing this? I am one of your allies, ”he said last year. “I’m gay, I’ve been in the Legislature for 36 years. That’s when the shots slowed down a bit.
