While high-ranking NFL executives think of players who stand up for justice this way, it’s no wonder Kaepernick and Reid are viewed throughout the league as untouchable outcasts.

After the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis sparked weeks of turbulent national protest, the league was finally ashamed to change its tone on race issues. Goodell introduced himself, after being called out by the players, to say what he had previously avoided: “Black Lives Matter”. He apologized for not doing it before and vowed the NFL would change.

In the aftermath of the 2020 protests and civic unrest, the league continues to make much of its purported commitment to supporting women, LGBTQ people, and especially African Americans. This year, the NFL continued the practice of painting feel-good phrases like “End Racism” in end zones and allowing players to wear approved slogans like “Black Lives Matter” on the back of helmets.

The hypocrisy is clear and manifests itself most clearly in matters of race.

Black players make up nearly 70% of the NFL rosters, including most of the league’s biggest stars. Yet there are only five general managers of black teams. There are no black team owners with controlling shares.

And only three of the 32 head coaches are black, despite eight vacant head coaching positions in the last hiring period.

It’s 2021.

Art Shell, the league’s first modern-era black head coach, was hired in 1989, most notably by the Raiders. In 32 years, real change has been rare.

Powerful men, especially powerful white males, have by far the most influence in professional football. How they act, who they anoint and hire, what they say, and in this case the occasional jokes and demeaning denigration underscore the lie of the league’s public postings. It is the men who make the day-to-day decisions in football. And these emails are where the real NFL culture has been exhibited.

It’s reality no matter how Goodell and the league owners turn it.
