A few years ago a friend from when I was in the Air Force heard me talk about my New England roots far too often and decided to take his family to our state and see “The spirit of America”.

His family visited all the attractions, starting in Boston, then Concord and Lexington, then on the South Rim to see Plymouth Rock, before heading to Cape Town.

This was before the widespread use of GPS navigation while driving and long before smartphones.

While traveling here from her home in the south, she found it amusing that people gave her directions based on the location of the Dunkin ‘in town.

“I was leaving the freeway and a guy at the gas station was like, ‘Take a right at Dunkin’, then go about a mile and turn left at the second Dunkin ‘”, I remember she told me . “And I like them to call them Dunks or Dunkies and they have these little munchkins. So cute.”

Then she would try to imitate a “Bawstin” accent and fail miserably. “Wicked smaht these munchkins,” she said.

We love our dunkin ‘, I told him. I said at the time that you could measure how “New England” a town was by the number of Dunkins there were.

Now I think the Dunkin ‘Global Empire, one of the largest coffeehouse companies with 12,900 locations, including over 4,200 in New England, has become a little too ubiquitous for its panties.

One example is how the developers are now suing the Holyoke Planning Council for voting against a Dunkin ‘project across from Mount Tom State Reserve.

The lawsuit brought by Salmar Realty of Ludlow, as well as The Log Cabin and Banquet House, claims that the board members, Vice President Mimi Panitch and Rosanna Lopez, “were either arbitrary / capricious or exceeded the legal authority of the advice”.

If you ask me, if someone has a finicky craving for a Dunkaccino or a French crisp at this point, there is something wrong with you. There are two Dunkin’s drive-throughs within three miles either way from Mount Tom.

But there is another reason I applauded when I read the Holyoke decision.

The last time I checked, David Hoffman, CEO of Dunkin, earned over $ 5.4 million in total compensation last year. Other senior Dunkin executives easily earned over a million. How about less growth and more money for your frontline workers, Dave?

The average hourly wage for a Dunkin ‘crew member in Massachusetts is $ 13.71, although the Dunkin’ closest to me now starts at $ 15. $ 15? Go figure it out. In 2015, Nigel Travis, then a senior executive of the chain, who made $ 4,887 an hour, sadly criticized a $ 15 minimum wage for fast food workers as “absolutely outrageous.”

What is actually scandalous is the workers at Dunkin who work long, hard hours to serve us coffee for such a small salary. Travis’ muffled comments were not surprising. If the minimum wage had risen as quickly as the compensation of CEOs of fast food chains over the past few decades, it would easily be over $ 100.

Dunkin ‘may be independently owned and operated, but I’d much rather spend my hard earned cash on feeding my caffeine addiction with one of the many excellent local roasters around us, all struggling for a living. in a competitive market.

What about donuts? I still mourn the loss of The Donut Man to Hadley. After its owners were forced to leave in 2017, Dunkin ‘moved in. So now I head to the Glazed Donut Shop in Amherst or 91 Donut Dip in West Springfield when I want the real one.

My friend came last summer for another visit to New England, this time taking the northern route through Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. A combined lakes and coastline camping trip. This time, she didn’t need to get directions to find all the right places. His smartphone did the job.

I asked her if she had visited a Dunkin ‘on her family trips.

No, she said. Her family stopped by local general stores and ate at local establishments, and they also found lots of good local cafes.

“We haven’t traveled to you to go to the fast food chains,” she told me. “Plus we now have dunkin ‘here too; they no longer have anything unique.

“America is running on Dunkin ‘,” the ad slogan says, but at least here in the Pioneer Valley, thanks to a local planning council, we can celebrate a little mug for the little guy, a giant mug for the local roasters. . Now that’s nasty smaht, I say.
