HOUSTON – Depending on your perspective, the Houston Astros are fascinating, infuriating, or confusing. Perhaps, however, they are all of these. The world, after all, is made up of many shades of gray.

Some baseball fans may never forgive the franchise for cheating in its winning 2017 World Series season. These transgressions were exhibited in November 2019 and subsequently investigated by Major League Baseball, which said the Astros’ illicit sign-stealing program continued for at least part of 2018. The league handed down penalties. before the 2020 season.

Still, Astros are enjoying one of the best runs in baseball history, while continuing to piss off Fans and opponents. The Director General is different now. So is the director. As is the distribution of characters surrounding the core of players. Still, the Astros continue to win. Maybe they didn’t need a trash can.

After knocking down the Boston Red Sox 5-0 in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series at Minute Maid Park on Friday, the Astros – once again – are in the World Series. Including their now tarnished 2017 season, the Astros have reached the final round three times in the past five years. They missed a victory to win the American League pennant in 2020.

The Astros will face the winner of the NL Championship Series between Atlanta and the Los Angeles Dodgers in a World Series starting on Tuesday.

To get there, the Astros won 95 games in the regular season and won their fourth AL West Division title in five years. Although their pitching staff lacked the star power of past playoffs, the Astros have excelled in many facets of the game – on the mound, at home plate and on the court.

Their greatest strength was a relentless attack which led the majors to score and was the most difficult to take down. And the talented core of their roster – first baseman Yuli Gurriel, second baseman Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa shortstop and third baseman Alex Bregman – was the common thread between the three World Series teams.

In the first round of the playoffs, the Astros overtook AL Central champion the Chicago White Sox, losing just one game and edging their opponent by 31-18.

In the ALCS, where the Astros were on their fifth straight trip, the Red Sox fought harder. Not only did they have more experience than the White Sox, but they also had one of the best attacks in baseball, which put the Astros’ pitching staff at risk.

The Astros trailed in the series, two games to one, before securing three straight wins. They scored nine points in Game 4 and again in Game 5 in Boston.

Back in Houston for Game 6, the winning formula was different. The Astros held a 2-0 lead in seven innings – both of which featured slugger Yordan Alvarez – then posted three more on a Kyle Tucker homer in the eighth. That was more than enough for a pitching team led by starter Luis Garcia, who allowed just one hit in five innings and two-thirds goalless.
