ALBUQUERQUE – There were at least two accidental firearm discharges on the set of an Alec Baldwin film shot in New Mexico days before he fatally shot the director of photography, according to three former members of the film crew.

The dumps took place on Oct. 16, former team members said, prompting a complaint to a supervisor about safety practices on the set, which was outside of Santa Fe. The members of the team, who asked not to be named for fear that their future employment in the industry might be affected, were among several workers who resigned, hours before the fatal shooting, over complaints about the work unpaid and working conditions on production.

The disclosures, which were first reported by The Los Angeles Times, focus on concerns about poorly followed protocols and labor disputes between producers and crew members during the production of “Rust”, a low budget film about a 19th century accidental murder and its aftermath .

Larry Zanoff, who worked on the set of “Django Unchained” as a gunsmith – a position that involves educating actors in the safe handling of firearms – and was not involved in “Rust,” has stated that if a gun went off on a film set, there would immediately be an investigation as to whether the gun was defective or mishandled. If the determination was that it was mismanaged, he said, production would experience tightening of security protocols and eventually ban the manager from using firearms.

It was not clear whether such an investigation took place after the October 16 incidents.

The film’s producers, including Mr Baldwin, said in a statement Friday that they had not been made aware of the safety concerns.

“Although we have not been made aware of any official complaints regarding the safety of weapons or accessories on set, we will be conducting an internal review of our procedures while production is down,” the production company said. of the film, Rust Movie Productions LLC, in the release. . “We will continue to cooperate with the Santa Fe authorities in their investigation and to provide mental health services to the cast and crew during this tragic time.”

The issues with the guns are fueling questions about how Mr. Baldwin might have handled a gun on the set that wasn’t safe. According to an affidavit signed by Detective Joel Cano of the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, an assistant director who handed the gun to him told Mr. Baldwin it was a “bladed weapon” , which on a movie set usually refers to a gun. it’s unloaded.

According to the affidavit of the detective from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, the gun used in the shooting was assembled by Hannah Gutierrez, the production gunsmith, and delivered to Mr. Baldwin by Dave Halls, the assistant director. Neither Ms Gutierrez nor Mr Halls responded to requests for comment.
