“In lesbian culture, Dinah Shore is the ultimate party and experience,” said third-time contestant Sarah R. Davis, 37, who lounged on a daybed with his wife, a dystopian feminist novel and an ice-cold bottle of Veuve Clicquot. She, like so many others in Palm Springs for the weekend, had learned of the existence of Dinah thanks to this famous episode of “L Word”. Once she got there, she understood her disproportionate reputation in queer circles. “It’s a place to be fully ourselves,” Ms. Davis said.

For years, even as famous artists such as Katy Perry, Lizzo, Lady Gaga and Tegan & Sara have headlined the festival, Saturday’s poolside party has remained the “L Word Pool Party”. “, out of respect for the cultural product which drew huge crowds to Dina.

“It amazes me that they always throw ‘L Word’ poolside parties,” Ilene Chaiken, one of the show’s creators, told Zoom. She compared attending the original cast to taking The Beatles anywhere in the early 1970s. “It never occurred to me that ‘The L Word’ would be marked in memoriam at the Dinah. . It’s an important part of our gay culture now. It has become an institution, and we need institutions.

Since the inception of the event, Palm Springs has seen its policy become more liberal, and in 2018 it became the first municipality in America with a city council whose members are all openly LGBTQ. The Dinah has also changed: although often considered a lesbian paradise, the event has opened up in recent years to non-binary and trans people, regardless of their gender.

“It’s bigger than a party. It is a movement. It’s powerful, ”said Ms. Hanson, 60. “We are creating five days where we live in a queer, non-binary lesbian world. We celebrate who we are.
