If a Democratic President did exactly what Donald trump did after losing his re-election – from radicalizing his supporters with lies of “voter fraud” to calling them on Capitol Hill on January 6 and then urging them to “stop the theft,” which led to a “act of domestic terrorismAs the FBI filed on Jan. 6 – is there any doubt that Republican members of Congress would cry out daily for this former president to be criminally prosecuted ?! We would hear GOP chants of “lock him up” on the house floor daily! And to be honest, they would do the right thing.

But as far as Trump is concerned, we hardly see any Democratic member of Congress calling for him to be the subject of a criminal investigation. That’s with the exception of a fiery 84-year-old Italian-American congressman from my home state of New Jersey, Bill pascrell. He not only has the courage to demand that Trump be prosecuted, but he is now call on his fellow Democrats for not having the “cogliones” (Italian slang for “balls”) to do the same – as he did earlier this week on my SiriusXM show.

Pascrell, who has been in Congress since 1996, has been calling for months for Trump to be prosecuted – and calling the Jan.6 attackers “terrorists” – for months. Maybe his brutal honesty is a Jersey thing, maybe it’s an Italian-American thing (I’m half Sicilian) but somehow we need more from the other Democrats.

In fact, a November 17, 2020 Tweeter Pinned to Pascrell’s Twitter account calling for Trump to be brought to justice: “Tonight I call for the possible prosecution of Donald Trump and his facilitators for their many crimes against the United States. »Attached to this tweet is a declaration de Pascrell who says in part: “Donald Trump and members of his administration have committed countless crimes against the United States”, then listing the criminal offenses for which Trump should be investigated, for personal gain from the presidency to Trump’s attacks on elections.

It was even before the January 6 riot. Since then, Pascrell has called for Trump to be prosecuted for possible crimes resulting from this terrorist attack.

“Trump is trying again to start an insurgency and have people killed,” he wrote in a Sept. 16 statement. Tweeter. “I demanded that Trump be arrested and prosecuted for his January 6 betrayal. Nothing has changed.”

Pascrell tweets daily slamming Republicans in Congress who backed Trump’s efforts to overthrow the election while correctly labeling the attackers for what they are: beating a dictator. They tried to finish the rioters’ job and end democracy. Never forget it. ”(The only change to this daily tweet is to update the number of days since the January 6 attack.)

Pascrell is 100% right on all points. Almost 70 percent Republicans in the House voted after the bombing to challenge the results. Those who attacked our Capitol are terrorists. It’s not hyperbolic. Earlier this week, the federal judge Emmet G. Sullivan, at a plea hearing for one of the assailants who said on January 6 that she wanted to shoot Nancy Pelosi “in the fucking brain” share his amazement at how “good people who never got into trouble with the law … turned into terrorists.” The reason this has happened, of course, is because Donald Trump has radicalized his supporters with a daily diet of lies – and continues to do so.

When I asked Pascrell why more Democrats in Congress didn’t join him in calling for Trump to be prosecuted, he responded bluntly: “They’re scared… scared to say it. “

“Let me tell you something, the Democrats – as they say in the old country – must have the coglions, must be able to stand, ”he said.

Pascrell, the former mayor of Paterson, New Jersey, whom he always proudly calls home, continued: “No one is above the law, and this former president should be treated like a common criminal, like if he was running down the street in my town with a TV strapped to his back which is obviously stolen.

The statement pinned to Pascrell’s Twitter profile properly warns us of what will happen if Trump is not prosecuted. It “further emboldens the criminality of our national leaders and pursues America down the path of lawlessness and authoritarianism.”

It is time for Democratic members of Congress to join with one voice with Pascrell in demanding that Trump be criminally prosecuted for his role in the January 6 attack. And to those Democrats who are reluctant to do so for fear of appearing political, remember: Seeking criminal prosecution against someone who incited an act of terrorism on the U.S. Capitol is not partisan – it’s patriotic.
