A Rasmussen poll at the end of last month had

Donald trump

beating President Biden by 10 points in a putative 2024 election. If vice president

Kamala harris

were the Democratic candidate, Mr. Trump’s margin of victory would be 13 points.

Polls at such a distance from a competition are completely artificial. Political weather can change in three days, let alone three years. Mr. Trump may not attend. Mr. Biden cannot introduce himself. Ms Harris might prove to be less inept in the next Democratic primary campaign than she was in the last.

But the poll surely captures current political sentiment. The Biden presidency is a metastasizing mess, a real-world case study of the perils of progressive impossibility: open borders; fiscal incontinence; naive strategic idealism; the wearing of the mask, the mandate, the annulment of dissent, authoritarian collectivism. Mr. Biden is Mickey Mouse as a Sorcerer’s Apprentice in

Walt disney‘s

Brilliant and nightmarish “Fantasia”. He grabbed the wizard’s big hat and now everything he touches becomes a cascade of destruction.

But the current situation and the poll’s judgment on it made me think: what should Mr. Trump’s margin be the next time around for him to be accepted as president by the elites who considered him to be theirs? Republican duty to thwart it? Ten percentage points? Twenty?

Then it was obvious. There is no margin of victory Mr. Trump could achieve that would legitimize his presidency in the eyes of the Democratic Party, the liberal media, most of the permanent government, and the rest of the establishment.

This is the greatest existential constitutional crisis the United States faces. This is not the case, as the Never Trump Robert Kagan argues in a recent trial, all the product of a personality cult, the work of a narcissistic caudillo who came out of nowhere to lead an army of putschists against a benevolent state. It is deeply rooted and bipartisan; malignancy owes at least as much to the sustained undemocratic behavior of the left and in much of the ruling classes as to the actions of a bombastic former president.

Mr. Trump bears much of the blame, of course. Whatever real doubts were sown last year by an election administered in the most permissive – and pro-Democrat-friendly – manner possible, he has not pleaded for rejecting even a single constituency. Its persistent refusal to accept the results exerts a destabilizing force on the creaky institutions of the Republican government.

But it is willful obscurantism on the part of its opponents to claim that the threat begins and ends there. The Never Trumpers say Mr. Trump’s legitimacy in 2024 has been fatally undermined by his behavior since last November. But if they were honest, people who want to arrest Donald Trump would admit that they have tampered with political standards themselves at least since he came down that escalator in 2015. The more we learn from John Durham’s investigation on Russian fabrications, the better we understand the scale and duration of the campaign to defeat Mr. Trump, and then, failing that, to destabilize his administration and, yes, to overthrow him.

Were the people who carried out this campaign, inside and outside the government, faithful guardians of the Constitution?

When Russia’s effort failed, empty and exhausted, to a futile stop, these constitutional purists sought alternative means to destroy the presidency. They seized the murder of a black man by a police officer to spark unrest in the country, embedding him in a narrative of racial persecution for which Mr. Trump was somehow held responsible.

“When the leak and innuendo campaign failed to dislodge Trump from power, the horizontally integrated elements of the newly assembled anti-Trump messaging complex had to pivot,” as writer Wesley Yang wrote. the dish. “They looked for a new basis to keep the state of emergency going, and they found a ready-made solution in the form of ‘anti-racist’ doctrines.”

This, in the climate of fear and anger generated by the pandemic, has proven to be a much more effective destabilization campaign. Augmented by a media and tech monolith that literally blocked media coverage unfavorable to Mr. Biden in the run-up to the election, he sealed the deal.

Even then, it was close. Does anyone think that if Mr. Trump had been able to overthrow three states that would have given him his re-election, this “resistance” movement, mobilized to neutralize the “urgency” of the Trump presidency, would have accepted it?

We know the answer. We saw evidence of this a few days before the vote: barricaded storefronts in major cities, a warning that if it went wrong there would be violent chaos on a scale likely larger than what we saw in the summer. latest.

This tale of the continuing constitutional crisis for which only Republicans are to blame is convenient political cover for Democrats. You will be told, even as Mickey Mouse’s reign of error continues, that you have no choice but to re-elect the people who choreographed him or else you will be guilty of plotting to overthrow the constitutional government. But until those on the other side recognize their own role in weakening democratic legitimacy, the crisis will only get worse.
