Dr Deborah Birx, who helped manage the coronavirus pandemic response for former President Donald J. Trump, told congressional investigators earlier this month that Mr Trump’s White House did not not taken measures that could have avoided tens of thousands of deaths.

During closed-door testimony before the House subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis, Dr Birx said that tens of thousands of dead could have been prevented after the initial phase of the pandemic whether Mr. Trump had pushed for mask wear, social distancing and other efforts to slow the spread of the virus.

“I believe if we had fully implemented the mask warrants, reducing indoor dining, making friends and family aware of the risk of congregating in private homes and we had increased the tests, we probably could have reduced the number of deaths within 30 percent. less to 40 percent less range, ”Dr. Birx said, according to excerpts provided by the committee.

The committee’s interview with Dr. Birx took place on October 12 and 13. In her testimony, she also lambasted Dr. Scott Atlas, a former Stanford neuroradiologist. who became an adviser to Mr. Trump and advocated for allowing the virus to spread to a large part of the population in order to allow otherwise healthy people to develop immunity against it.

She told the committee that Dr Atlas had relied on incomplete information to draw dangerous conclusions that she said could have long-term consequences for people infected with the virus and fallen ill.

“I constantly sounded the alarm at physician meetings for the depth of my concern about Dr Atlas’ position, Dr Atlas’ access, Dr Atlas’ theories and assumptions, and the depth and ‘extent of my concern, “she said. said, referring to a group of medics involved in the White House response who met regularly.

Dr Atlas did not immediately respond to an email sent Tuesday morning. But in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece last December, he continued to oppose lockdowns and other measures to contain the virus.

“The lockdown policies have taken a toll on local economies, families and children, and the virus has spread nonetheless,” he wrote.

During her testimony, Dr Birx said she repeatedly urged Mr Trump and others in the White House to do more to embrace efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus, particularly to the fall 2020. It was a time when Dr Atlas was in the White House and Dr Birx spent most of his time on the road, traveling from state to state urging them to adopt preventive measures. .

When asked if Mr. Trump had done all he needed to do to deal with the pandemic, she replied, “No. And I said that to the White House in general, and I think I was very clear with the president on what I needed him to do.

Dr Birx’s description of his clashes with the White House last fall is in stark contradiction to reports of his actions earlier that year. She has often argued to others in the White House that the pandemic recedes in April and May.

An article in the New York Times in July 2020 revealed his optimistic discussions with senior administration officials including Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, and Hope Hicks, an aide to Mr. Kushner: “Dr. Birx was walking the halls of the White House, talking to Mr. Kushner, Ms. Hicks and others sometimes handing out diagrams to substantiate his case. “We have reached our peak,” she said, and that message would be sent back to Mr. Trump. “

Dr Birx declined to comment for this article.
