Time is a flat circle, but we want to help you break it. To that end, we brought in two experts – one with a knowledge of the ins and outs of New York soccer teams, the other a country-focused soccer analyst – to answer a critical question as service to readers: is this team Well Again?

Devin Gordon, who has written about sports for ESPN and GQ and is the author of “So Many Ways to Lose: The Amazin ‘True Story of the New York Mets, the Best Worst Team in Sports”, observed both the Giants and the Jets. from a local perspective.

Charles McDonald, NFL analyst at For the Win and co-host of “The counter” podcast and the “Define the edge “ podcast, offered a national vision.

The Jets (1-4) fell behind the Atlanta Falcons (2-3) early on Sunday and couldn’t complete a second-half comeback, losing 27-20.

Was it the Jets, or was it the jet lag? The NFL games in London have been the annual event horse in hospital football programming. Sunday’s game against the Falcons at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – kicked off at 9:30 a.m. EST – presented unique variables to gauge the question of the Jets’ current level of surveillance.

At this point in the season, however, the Jets have established some constants. They racked up more penalty distances than assists in the first half, and have now been outscored, 75-13, in the first halves of games this season and passed, 1,030 yards to 420. Against the Falcons, they entered at halftime, 20-3.

When the Jets finally arrived in the second half, Zach Wilson showed off what must be officially his favorite game: rolling to the right, then bombing. He usually doesn’t attempt it until the second half, and during that narrow slice of action the Jets are genuinely electric. In the third quarter, down, 20-9, after a touchdown to open the second half, Wilson went to his favorite game, but wide receiver Corey Davis was well covered and the ball fell harmlessly onto the turf.

Halfway through the fourth quarter he tried again, and this time wide rookie Elijah Moore was so wide open that Falcons cornerback AJ Terrell had to flatten him at the goal line before catching him. The critical 41-yard pass interference call, forced by Wilson’s arm and Moore’s speed, led to a touchdown and 2-point conversion that put the Jets within 3 of the Falcons.

Was it a vision of the future? A fever dream before brunch? Was it really the football player Christian Pulisic in the house in Gang Green outfit? Is this the reality? Matt Ryan responded immediately with a touchdown and the Falcons won 27-20. Welcome to reality, Jets fans.

Verdict: I should have slept.

So far, Robert Saleh’s Jets team doesn’t look all that different from the Adam Gase era. That’s not to say Saleh, Zach Wilson and the rest of this regime won’t know how to win games and play competitive football, but their 27-20 loss to the hapless Atlanta Falcons shows just how far away from the Jets. to build something worth watching.

The offense was a complete horror, scoring just 3 points in the first half against the Falcons. Wilson and the Jets’ running game managed to put in some practice in the second half to close the gap, but overall it was another lethargic effort.

At 1-4, the 2021 Jets are better than only the 2020 Jets, who only got their first win in Week 15, by record at this point. But it doesn’t look like this team is capable of creating a quality professional product for a whole 60 minutes – and it has been for far too long.

Returning from London, the Jets will have a chance to regroup in the week off before their rematch against the Patriots at Foxborough. They last played with a 25-6 win over the Patriots in Week 2, when Wilson looked like Sam Darnold in Monday night’s infamous “Seeing Ghosts” game.

Verdict: This season looks like a rerun, and you can change the channel.
