Anne Saxelby, who has championed American artisan cheeses for more than 15 years, died on Saturday. She was 40 years old and had heart disease. From her tiny first stand for Saxelby cheese makers from the Essex Market on the Lower East Side, which she opened in 2006, to the larger counter in Chelsea Market where she moved in 2017, she took the bold stance of only selling cheeses made in the United States. She researched them and helped cheese lovers and chefs discover independent and pioneering cheese makers like Jasper Hill who broke new ground by tearing pages away from European traditions. His death resonated in the food industry. “She was a humble and masterful advocate for American cheese makers, fostering a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship and the people behind cheese,” said Adeline Druart, President of Vermont Creamery. With Ms. Saxelby’s longtime partner, Benoit Breal, now at the helm, the company will continue its founder’s mission, “to be the bridge between local cheese makers and consumers for many years to come,” as the Mr. Breal said.
