Last month, a group of Democratic representatives held a press conference on the Capitol steps to mark the House’s passage of a measure to protect women’s reproductive rights. Georgian Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene heckled the press conference: “It’s not women’s rights. Killing a baby until it is born is not a right. It is not health care. It is evil.

After Democratic Rep. Debbie Dingell spoke out against Greene’s rude behavior, Greene shouted, “Killing a baby to birth is a lack of civility. It’s called murder!

Here’s a news flash for Greene: That’s a lie. It’s not just a harmless “white lie” that we casually attribute to all politicians, not a bit of the truth to draw attention to an issue, not a difference of opinion on an abstract concept.

No Democrat occupies a position close to Greene’s dishonest rant. No Democrat in this country has ever said something like, “I want people to kill a baby right before it’s born. No Democrat has ever written a position paper with a statement that sounded like “Murdering a child just before birth is good public policy.” No Democrat’s campaign speech has ever included a line like “A vote for me is a vote for tearing a baby from its mother’s womb just before birth.”

Additionally, every non-partisan fact-checker who has looked at the matter has determined that the claim that Democrats are in favor of “killing a baby until it is born” is a lie. Telling such an obvious and disgusting lie reveals a person who has let go of reality, reason, common sense, and basic human decency.

But here’s the worst part of Greene’s lie: This lie has become a mainstream Republican point of view. In recent years, prominent Republicans such as former Vice President Mike Pence, Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, Representative Elise Stefanik and many others have claimed Democrats supported abortion on demand until at birth. Rubio absurdly declared that Democrats support “infanticide”.

Even the Supreme Leader of the Republican Party himself has repeatedly told this lie. For example, former President Donald Trump said at a rally in 2020: “Virtually all Democratic candidates have declared their unlimited support for extreme late abortion, tearing babies straight from the mother’s womb, until very moment of birth.

They are all lying.

When I discuss abortion with Republicans, I’m almost always told I’m in favor of killing babies right before birth. I don’t, of course. How can I have a reasonable discussion with someone who believes a monstrous lie about my opinions?

It’s not shocking that Republican politicians are lying. It has become the hallmark of their party. For decades they have argued that tax cuts for the rich create jobs and reduce the deficit, which is wrong by any evidence-based measure. Republicans claim Democrats hate America and God. Their media spokespersons say Democrats are trying to replace white Americans with brown immigrants while claiming Democrats are the real racists because we think it makes sense to understand the role of racism in American history. Republicans turned the January 6 insurgency into a tourist outing. And Republican leaders are calling vaccines and masks of tyranny instead of what they really are: public health policies that save lives.

All of these grassroots Republican positions are huge lies. Polls show that a majority of Republicans even believe in the “big lie” that Trump actually won the 2020 election. In reality, President Joe Biden won the popular vote by over seven million votes and the college electoral 306-232. Every subsequent recount and court challenge confirmed Biden’s victory. Yet the Republican “big lie” continues to flow.

Of course, many Democratic politicians engage in rhetorical rhetoric and sometimes distort the facts. But Democrats don’t lie with the frequency or intensity of Republicans. Lies as blatant as those regularly told by Republican politicians should not be rewarded with the vote of a single American.

Here’s the real Democratic stance on the specific issue Greene and his fellow Republicans lied about: We believe women should control their own bodies, including the freedom to procreate. We also believe that any woman facing a tragic situation of health issues at any stage of pregnancy should be able to make her own decisions without having to follow arbitrary government decrees – especially not government liars.

Greene apparently didn’t think it would help his cause if his performance on the Capitol Steps looked like this: “Letting women make their own decisions is murder!” A more responsible representative could have said in a reasonable voice: “I do not agree with you on the political positions on abortion. Better yet, Greene could have done what members of Congress are supposed to do. She could have walked down the Capitol steps, walked to her office, did basic research on the issue, consulted with experts, listened to the real-life experiences of her constituents, and helped come up with sensible legislation to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.

Nope. Greene would rather shout lies than do his damn job.

And that pretty much sums up the current situation in the United States Congress. Democrats aren’t perfect, but they do the difficult and controversial job of crafting important legislation to help the American people. Republicans? They have checked with the responsible government and are throwing lies like reckless hecklers.

It’s our choice in November 2022, America. Please choose wisely.
