The World Health Organization on Wednesday opened a center in Berlin where information can be shared to help prepare the world for the next global health crisis.

The center, known as the Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence, will bring together data from around the world and share it internationally in an increased effort to enable health authorities to recognize disease trends as they arise. ‘they arise and develop new analyzes and models. tools to use this data in establishing epidemic control strategies, WHO said on its website.

The center will assess traditional disease surveillance information, such as the number of cases and laboratory results, as well as environmental, social, economic, cultural and agricultural factors.

It will focus on what WHO has called “collaborative intelligence” – the coherent sharing of information between political, scientific and civil organizations to develop a coordinated approach, according to one. paper on the hub. Countries and institutions, public and private, must trust each other for the hub to function properly, according to the newspaper.

The coronavirus pandemic was the catalyst for the hub, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, said at a press conference on Wednesday after a groundbreaking ceremony in Berlin that included German Chancellor Angela Merkel among the dignitaries.

“Even if we respond to the pandemic, we must learn the lessons it teaches us,” said Dr Tedros. “One of the clearest is the need for powerful new global surveillance systems and tools to collect, analyze and disseminate data on epidemics with the potential to become epidemics and pandemics. Viruses need to move fast, but data can move even faster. “

The German government is initially funding the effort, and Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, director general of the Nigerian Center for Disease Control, will lead it. The center is part of the WHO health emergency program, headed by Dr Michael Ryan.

Dr Ryan said the deeply intertwined nature of the modern world, which can allow new disease – and misinformation – to spread across the world at astonishing speed, could help fight pathogens if nations work. together.

“This interconnection is also our greatest strength,” he said.
