Welcome. Do you know those albums or songs that you associate so deeply with a moment in your life that only opening bars, maybe even a few notes, work like some sort of time machine? You hear a song and you’re transported to that room in this house – maybe it is your childhood bedroom or college dorm. Maybe you’re 11 again, or you’re dating this person again, or taking that very specific path back to school, the one you’ve been listening to that same album on, over and over again. , on your Walkman (or Discman or iPod Nano).

One of those albums for me is “Poses” by Rufus Wainwright who turned 20 last June. I was living overseas shortly after it was released, and my boyfriend back in New York sent me a burned copy of the CD, which I voraciously listened to in that purposeful, pre-streaming manner that gave you the impression that the music was getting in your cells.

This weekend, if you are feeling a little restless, like you want to leave but for various reasons it is not practical or possible at the moment, maybe some music could take you somewhere else. I’m gonna listen to “Poses” and let the cutscene swell, the hyper-romantic lyrics (“I didn’t want to be anyone anymore / Now I’m drunk and wearing flip flops on Fifth Avenue”) take me to another time, with its own sights, smells and sensations. I’ll let it all in.

An audio trip can take the whole weekend, but if it doesn’t, The Times Magazine The Voyages number offers you a complete virtual itinerary: Athens, the swiss alps, Machu Picchu, Spokane. You could visit Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard Where a hamlet in Umbria that journalist Helene Cooper calls “rightfully the most beautiful place in the world”. where to take a bike ride in Queens with David Byrne.
