What is the ultimate pair of Forever jeans?

At this point, every new jeans trend seems horrible to me. I realize that I have entered the “classic” phase of my life and that I am f...

The point is, we live in the era of casual jeans. They’re skinny, wide, boyfriend, flared, distressed, stovepipe, acid washed, recycled, jeggings. Whatever you want, there is a jean style for it.

On the one hand, this means that every trend is available at all times. On the other hand, it can mean a closet full of denim and a feeling of confusion as to what exactly to wear. This is generally known as option anxiety.

An idea: Look for the model. For that, I can’t offer a better idea than Princess Diana, circa 1990’s. It’s not just because she’s experiencing a major cultural renaissance, between “The Crown”, the new musical “Diana” on Broadway in November and the much-hyped biopic “Spencer” with Kristen Stewart. It’s also because she was truly the first royal to make jeans a public thing, and in doing so, she managed to bridge the tradition-contemporary divide her position demanded.

And when it comes to Diana, she almost always went for straight-leg, high-waisted (but not too high) denim. No weird rips or washes involved.

Where can I find it today?

“It’s the simplest thing, but also the most difficult,” said Samira Nasr, editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar. She suggests Feel jeans from LA They’re made locally, basically in one style, which Ms. Nasr calls “the perfect jeans” in terms of weight and fit. Like Goldilocks and Little Bear’s Chair, it’s not too big, not too soft, but just right.

They are also relatively expensive, but one way to think about investing in jeans is this: add up the amount you spent on cheaper pairs that you no longer wear because they are too associated with a specific trend, and then consider the value of a single pair that you wear all the time for many years. It is probably worth it.

Other alternatives to look for include the (natch) 90s jeans from Everlane, which is pretty self-explanatory; Levi’s (the original – see Wedge cut and try to ignore the name); and Madewell, the perfect vintage jeans. (On sale, these are even better.)

Either way, the goal should be, said Laura Brown, editor-in-chief of InStyle, “to feel lightning-fast and with your legs in the air, without ankle pain.” . She was sitting in the front row of MaxMara as she said this, wearing (yes) a pair of jeans. Although she remembers where she got them – Citizens of humanity – she had no memory of when. Which should be exactly the point.
