This is my umpteenth trip to Vegas, and although I rarely bet more than $ 20 on the slots, I still appreciate the energy you can win. But tonight, it’s like everyone and their mom have decided to make this weekend, maybe this very hotel, a symbol of the liberation we’ve all been looking for. But there is a part of me that is hungry for this daring and ubiquitous YOLO, that wishes to be able to summon that mark of fearlessness.

There is a fine line between doing what is right for our personal safety and better public health and giving up a freedom that the rulers of the universe might never give back to us. Staying on the right side of that line – who can know for sure where it is and whether we have crossed it – seems more precarious to us blacks, a people who, let no one forget, have been deprived of self-determination. (slave passes, slave patrols, black codes, other unspeakable means) for twice as long as we’ve been half-balked about. If Covid provides cover for leaders to usurp some more freedom from the masses, trust me, my people have left worse than most if not all of the others.

And yet, in the same vein as I suspect the city’s gambling odds and sleight of hand, I am wary of the blissful and apparent recklessness displayed, rightly or wrongly; I count every person without a mask as a proxy – I have lost all patience with antivaxxers – for the endurance of this devastating pandemic. Plus the wiser part of me knows that all of this Carpe Diem business is better suited to those whose health is better than my brothers and me. Not only do black men suffer the shortest lifespans of any American demographic, but Covid stops blacks in the crew’s age range at least twice as much as whites of comparable age.

Come find out, almost the entire crew is vaccinated.

But we are losing Cowan and Blass.

We are losing Cowan. We are losing Blass.

And any of us could be next.

Some crew members pass blunts and babble on the balcony. Downstairs, the hotel pool party ends at dusk.

One, two, more, the crew return to the suite, leaving me alone with AD on the balcony. Of all the guys on the team, AD is the one I spent the least time with. He’s one of the oldest – we didn’t face each other in high school – he lived further away than most of the crew and was less present at the height of our interactions.

AD reveals that not long ago he found out that the man who raised him was not his biological father. He explains that he only discovered paternity after the death of his biological father, and adds that, as fate decreed, his biological father was also the father of his childhood best friend. AD shares that his organic pop was additionally our boy Dub’s adopted uncle. “This is crazy, man,” he said, pain in his almost bare voice. “Kenny knew my pops better than I did.”
