Sometimes even a classic needs a bit of touch up.

From Wednesday, Classic Turner Movies gets a new look. TCM, the cable TV home to countless vintage films, will have a colorful new aesthetic in its on-air promotions, new openings for shows like “The Essentials” and “Noir Alley”, new sets for hosts like Ben Mankiewicz, a new logo and branding that emphasizes the interplay between the history of cinema yesterday and today.

And as Mankiewicz said recently, he’s already preparing for how these changes will be received.

“My first reaction had nothing to do with me and everything to do with our audience,” he said. “Which was, ‘Uh-oh.'”

TCM leaders and talents say its overall mission will remain the same and that this latest update is aesthetic, meant to help the cable channel stay relevant and reach a wider audience.

While preserving and celebrating the past, TCM also thinks about its future. In an age increasingly dominated by streaming TV, how can it continue to thrive as a linear cable channel while bringing its experience to other platforms? As owned by WarnerMedia, how can TCM contribute to that company’s HBO Max streaming service without being swallowed up by it?

At the same time, TCM doesn’t want to alienate its existing audience – an audience that values ​​its curation of films and their commentary on them. And as TCM rolls out its rebranding, it recognizes that even cosmetic changes can look like warning signs of fundamental changes in philosophy.

As Mankiewicz explained, “I want to make sure the fans understand that what interests them doesn’t change. But they’re still going to have a little heart attack.”

Pola Changnon, a seasoned TCM executive who became its chief executive in January 2020, said she and her colleagues had been considering a channel refresh for several months.

Looking back on TCM’s 27-year history, Changnon said the channel has always satisfied a core audience “who really just wants their Doris Day movies, that long-awaited classic catalog. But there are also people who are more adventurous, who want to learn and engage in a different way.

To this end, TCM has already started adding programs like “Cropped” a series that re-examines films like “The Jazz Singer,” “Gone with the Wind” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” which have been criticized for their outdated treatment of race, gender and sexuality.

“You can still enjoy the movie, but you recognize some of the things that to contemporary eyes can be difficult,” Changnon said. “We don’t want to cancel these films – we prefer to start a conversation around them.”

The redesign introduced on Wednesday features a light palette intended to evoke the Technicolor logo. The TCM logo has a new font and onscreen an animated letter C that takes on different shapes and sizes before resting on a shape that resembles a camera lens or film passing through a projector.

A new advertising campaign and a new slogan, “Where Then Meets Now”, will underline the links that TCM seeks to establish with its programming, targeting moviegoers while inviting neophytes. Visitors to this month’s Telluride Film Festival, for example, will be greeted with banners featuring artwork that juxtapose scenes from George Cukor and Bradley Cooper’s remakes of “A Star Is Born,” or the incarnations of John Wayne and Jeff Bridges of Rooster Cogburn from their version of “True Grit”.

Warner Bros. Marketing Director Tricia Melton ‘ global division of children, young adults and classics, said these changes at TCM were meant to highlight “how the past can inform the present.”

While other channels and streaming sites may offer large libraries of movies, Melton said TCM stands out for “the ability to bring curation and context to these movies – why they still resonate today, why they are important “.

This cultural shift was accelerated by the emergence of HBO Max, which debuted in May 2020 and has since become a crucial platform for WarnerMedia movies and TV shows. As he and his colleagues explore new ways for TCM to use HBO Max, Ascheim pointed out TCM Classic Film Festival – which was held in May as a virtual event taking place entirely on TCM and HBO Max – as proof that the two platforms can coexist and complement each other.

“We have a chance to make the power of curation much stronger on a streaming service than some of our competitors, which compete on volume and algorithm,” he said. “Pay-per-view TV is not that great. Carefully chosen television for me, by someone I really trust, who feels good all day.

Ascheim said the expansion of the channel’s streaming presence was not a sign TCM was abandoning traditional cable TV or its own underlying values.

“There is no intention of turning TCM into Cinemax, just like a bunch of movies right now,” he said. “As long as linear is there, we’ll be there with pride.”

Yet even the suggestion of changes to TCM is enough to arouse skepticism from its viewers. When a short teaser video was posted on Twitter last week, showing Mankiewicz painting his own backdrop, prompted a series of questioning comments. Sam Adams, Editor-in-Chief at Slate, wrote in a tweet: “assuming that means a change to ‘HBO Classic’ or something like that”

But TCM staff have said that kind of questioning is part of the process. Mankiewicz said he was subjected to a similar scrutiny when he joined TCM in 2003 as a permanent host – a role which, until then, had only been occupied by the iconic personality of the network, Robert osborne.

“For not a month or two months but for years there was a feeling of, who the hell is this guy?” Mankiewicz recalled. “It was only after two or three years that they said to themselves: This guy is talking about movies, it’s okay, everything is fine.”

All that was updated, Mankiewicz said, was the network’s outward appearance and logo, its ensemble, and possibly its clothing. “My wardrobe will probably change a bit,” he said. “I don’t go out in shorts. It’s not going to happen. “

As technology and platforms continue to evolve, Mankiewicz said, what will remain the same is TCM’s goal to bring their movies and commentary to all of these places.

“What you are experiencing at TCM, I am very confident that you will be able to experience it in 25 years,” he said. “I’m not smart enough to say exactly how it’s going to be delivered to you. But will you be watching selected films with a host intro where the films are put in context? And will everything on the channel be fantastic the way it is now? Yes, I am 100 percent sure.
