When screenwriters and directors Mariama Rose Diallo and Benjamin Gerrish Dickinson met in July 2018 at a Brooklyn bar, they found themselves locked into a deep conversation. Ms Diallo said she had become so intrigued that she thought about “how about to turn my life upside down by running away with a handsome stranger”.

It could have been difficult for Ms. Diallo, 33, who is currently finishing her first feature film, “Master,” which will be released by Amazon Studios next year. She was also dating someone else when she met Mr. Dickinson, 39, who wrote and directed the feature films “First Winter” (2012) and “Creative Control” (2015).

“The chemistry was undeniable,” Mr. Dickinson said. “The only problem was that neither of us were single.”

Although Ms Diallo refrained from running away with Mr Dickinson, she couldn’t help but run into him.

They were first reunited in 2018 at a dance party in Brooklyn, where they both lived, and where Ms Diallo stunned Mr Dickinson by asking, ‘Why haven’t you tried to m ‘to call ?

Later that year, at the New York City Marathon, where she and Mr. Dickinson were part of a group gathered to cheer on the runners, he asked a mutual friend for his email address.

In December, Yale graduate Ms. Diallo and NYU graduate Mr. Dickinson were an item.

“I had such strong feelings for Benjamin,” Ms. Diallo said. “When he emailed me, I broke up with my boyfriend soon after.”

On their first date, at a Brooklyn cocktail bar in November 2018, they sang karaoke.

“We hit it off immediately,” Ms. Diallo said. “As soon as we sat down together I felt completely relaxed.”

They immediately started dating regularly and quickly flew out together for a work-related meeting to pitch movie ideas to movie executives in Los Angeles, and made it a vacation by adding a trip to Palm Springs.

Ms Diallo said that over the next few months, two of their favorite pastimes have been running and watching movies together.

“I dated filmmakers before, but they never seemed to want to watch anything,” Ms. Diallo said. “But Benjamin and I really like going to the movies together.”

They got engaged on their two-year anniversary on November 14, 2020, after quarantining each other for the pandemic in Woodstock, NY, where they took in a magnificent view of the Hudson Valley.

“His personality and his identity completely forged itself,” said Mr. Dickinson. “She didn’t need me, so I could tell she wanted to be with me.”

Mrs. Diallo returned the compliment. “Our lives together are completely harmonious,” she said. “I am able to share so much, with this companion, this friend of mine who loves the same things the same way I love them.”

They tied the knot on August 28 in an outdoor ceremony at Heartland, a private farm in Campbell Hall, NY David May, a friend of the couple who has been ordained by the Universal Life Church, officiated. Hana Driss, also a friend of the couple, participated in the ceremony.

Among the guests were the parents of the bride, Florence Kabba from New York and Dr Djibril Diallo from Dakar, Senegal.

Also in attendance were the groom’s parents, Stephanie Dickinson and Gordon Dickinson of Evanston, Illinois. The father of the groom is retired as senior vice president of Callan Associates, a Chicago-based investment advisory firm.
