This season's vital college football stats: vaccination rates

“If a guy doesn’t want to get it, I’m not going to jump on him for it,” he said.

Even the mildest campaigns met resistance, some of which was supported. The players wondered if they, as young and healthy people, needed help battling the virus and whether a new vaccine would endanger a body that could net them millions of dollars. Others drew on their unvaccinated parents or comments online. Often times, some coaches have said with regret, ordinary college laziness is to blame.

“People just don’t go because it’s easier not to; it’s easier not to go to the pharmacy and have it, ”Kiffin said. He added that medical staff and coaches, who often know players intimately through recruiting, have actively spoken with holdouts, seeking details of the reasons for their reluctance. Interest skyrocketed in the weeks leading up to the expected start of the season, he said, much like how a student might handle the urgency of an assignment.

Some coaches have tried to help parents of players through uncertain times. Arizona’s new coach Jedd Fisch said he used video calls to make a direct case to parents: “I don’t want to have to call you to tell you your son is in the hospital. “

Although many teams say they have largely focused their arguments on the medical and societal benefits of vaccines, players have nudged their teammates by appealing to their competitiveness. And coaches and medical staff have explained the aggravations, like masks and testing, that will come from being left unprotected during the season.

“They have to decide for themselves if it’s the right decision,” said PJ Fleck, coach of Minnesota, where more than 30 Gophers missed the Nebraska game last season due to a viral outbreak. “But there are times when you have no choice as to the consequence, and you have to know the consequence based on your decision.”

Beyond any individual inconvenience, the country’s top college football conferences are showing little patience in the face of outbreaks and have warned that teams could forgo games if they cannot field enough players. But even if a team can muster enough from their roster, unvaccinated players could be left behind for weeks if they are drawn into contact tracing. Missed games, some coaches have warned, could well dampen a player’s professional outlook.

Week after week, vaccination rates increased slightly, one player at a time.

In Tucson, Ariz., Fisch appeared to use every meeting to remind the Wildcats of their numbers.
