President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in a video shared on Twitter around 11 p.m. EST, said there had been no significant damage in the state of Guerrero, the epicenter of the earthquake, or in neighboring states of Morelos, Oaxaca, Puebla or the capital, Mexico City, after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit the Mexican resort of Acapulco on Tuesday.

“Fortunately, there is no serious damage,” he said, adding that he had spoken with state and local authorities in the affected areas.

Emergency services in Guerrero said there had been reports of power outages and issues with phone service across the state. Authorities have asked residents to remain calm and report any fires.

Claudia Sheinbaum, Mayor of Mexico City, said the Twitter that several parts of the city had lost their electricity, but that public transport was functioning normally.
