The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles announced on Tuesday that Johanna Burton would become the institution’s sole director and first woman in this role, now that Klaus Biesenbach has announcement he will move to Berlin to run the Neue Nationalgalerie and the adjacent 20th Century Museum, which is currently under development.

In a decision announcement Last February, the museum announced that Biesenbach, the director, would become artistic director and run the museum with an executive director. Burton was hired for this job earlier this month. But in Tuesday’s statement, the museum said it had no plans to hire another art director. Instead, Burton will be running the museum solo from November 1. The interim will serve as a transition period.

Although brief, the announcement appears to confirm the implications of the museum’s earlier decision to split the work into an effort to compensate for the management weaknesses of Biesenbach.

When Burton was appointed, Maria Seferian, President of MOCA, said, “I don’t think it’s just one job. I think this is the right model for us at the moment.

Asked why this model had now returned, Seferian said in a telephone interview, “We met while we were. There was logic behind it at the time and circumstances changed. “

Burton’s experience allows him to handle all of the work; she currently directs the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University. Prior to that, she was Director and Curator of Education and Public Engagement at the New Museum in New York; director of the graduate program at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College; and associate director of the independent studies program at the Whitney Museum.

“The museum is in excellent hands with Johanna,” the statement said, adding that Burton “has all the faith and confidence of the museum to lead MOCA into the future.”
