We live in a time of megaphilanthropy. Big billionaires in Silicon Valley are dedicating their fortunes to social causes ranging from poverty and healthcare to education and gender equality. Two New Yorker philanthropists took a different path, eschewing noble causes in favor of tangible and physical contributions to improve the life of their city.

Entertainment mogul Barry Diller and fashion entrepreneur Diane von Furstenberg were among the most generous backers of the High Line, a famous raised public park built in 2009 along an abandoned railroad track on the west side of Manhattan. Now, they’ve completed their work with Little Island, a delightfully imaginative $ 260 million park built on the stilts of an unused Hudson River pier. The 2.4-acre green space above the water draws timed Covid-era crowds to its playful features, including walking trails, amphitheatres and gardens with stunning views of the city skyline and the river. The elaborate plantings engage horticulturalists and the chimes attract children.
