Turns out, if a team is on the sidelines of the playoff race, a good way to come back is to win a whole bunch of games in a row. The St. Louis Cardinals confirmed that by clinching a playoff berth on Tuesday night with their 17th straight victory.

After the September 10 games, the Cardinals found themselves 71-69, 15 games behind the Brewers in the National League Central and fourth among the wild card contenders, three and a half games away from the second place. . Until Tuesday, they were 88-69, still six games behind the top-flight Milwaukee Brewers, but have made it safe to the playoffs.

At the start of the streak, the Cards were one game ahead of a some New York team in the ranking. Now they are 13 games ahead of them. Sorry, Mets fans.

With an offensive attack that includes three players from 30 home runs (Nolan Arenado, Tyler O’Neill and Paul Goldschmidt) and with a pitching staff that includes a 40-year-old rookie Adam Wainwright, who has 17 wins and a 3.05 ERA, the Cardinals will be a tough challenge in the wildcard game, even if they will be either underdogs to the Los Angeles Dodgers or the San Francisco Giants (depending on which team wins the NL West).

Major winning streaks are not uncommon in baseball: since 1900, nearly 400 teams have won at least 10 in a row, for example. (No complaints against the St Louis Maroons or the Providence Grays, but we are staying in the modern era.)

But as the streaks lengthen, they become much rarer. The Cardinals are only the 14th team since 1900 to win 17 in a row, and the record streak is only 26. Or is it 22?

If the Cardinals continued to win, starting with Wednesday night’s game against the Brewers, they could join a real elite company.

Has 18 wins are two New York teams. The 1904 Giants won 106 games, but refused to participate in the all-new “World Series” which had relaunched the previous season as a championship between the National and American leagues. The 1953 Yankees had no such qualms: after sweeping an easy pennant behind Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra, they beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in the series.

Has 19 wins are two other World Series winning teams, Joe DiMaggio’s 1947 Yankees and 1906 White Sox, who beat the Yankees (then called the Highlanders) at the pennant. Strangely enough, none of the longer streaks belong to the World Series winners.

Has 20 wins are the Oakland Athletics 2002, a sequence immortalized in the film “Moneyball”. Game 20 was won on a homerun hit by Chris Pratt, uh, Scott Hatteberg.

Has 21 wins are the 1935 Chicago Cubs. The streak began in September with the team two and a half games off the flag. The Cubs led the streak to a four-game margin in the final standings, but lost the World Series to the Tigers and ended up waiting until 2016 for a championship.

Has 22 wins is Cleveland in 2017. Best team in the American League with 102 wins, the team was beaten by the Yankees in the playoffs in upheaval. The streak surpasses all those of the 19th century, making it the record. Unless you count …

To a breathtaking 26 games are the 1916 New York Giants, and it was an odd streak for several reasons. The team started the season 2-13 and looked ready for a year of stench. But then the team stumbled upon some bizarre, albeit temporary, baseball magic.

The team had 17 consecutive victories and then… it started to stink again. His record fell from 19-13 at the end of the streak to 59-62 in September. And then, unbelievably, the magic returned. The Giants made another tear, this one a record, winning 26 unbeaten. When they finally lost, a New York Times headline read: “Braves End Flare of Giants’ Meteor.”The end result was a record 86-66, and only a fourth place. When the team didn’t score it was 43-66.

So why is there any doubt as to whether this 26-year-old is really the record? In the midst of all those W’s is an unsightly scar: a T. Ties were not uncommon in the early part of the 20th century, when sunset ended games, and the Giants had a draw 1- 1 against Pittsburgh in Game 2. of a double program which at least somewhat marred the sequence.

In the official Elias Sports Bureau record book, which recognizes the streak of 26 consecutive games as a record, ties are ignored in the calculation of winning streaks. But if you’re a devotee (or a Cleveland fan), you can choose to credit the 1916 Giants with a 12 player and a 14 player sandwiched around a tie.
