D “As vaccine-suspicious staff prepare to lose jobs, New York hospitals brace for tension»(Press article, September 27):

I am a doctor and I am appalled that so many of my colleagues would rather lose their jobs than get vaccinated. No one, especially a healthcare worker, has the right to endanger the health of a patient when there is no risk to himself.

It reminds me of the situation in 1981 with the air traffic controllers, which I supported, but who showed that we can go through a crisis of massive layoffs of essential workers. The lesson to be learned is that there is a difference between being essential and being irreplaceable. While employees need protection from employer abuse and exploitation, the current situation is neither.

For those who think it is a matter of personal autonomy, I say that sometimes taking a stand comes with personal sacrifice. It is their right and their choice, but what they are asked to do is reasonable.

No more excuses. Don’t let anti-vaccinations ruin all of this for the rest of us. It is time to unite. I want to go to a hospital or clinic where everyone is vaccinated. I did my part; now it’s time for others to do theirs. I will therefore not allow any medical personnel to treat me unless they are vaccinated. We can all do it, and the pressure will not only be on government and business, but also on individuals. Let’s take back our power.

It is the same with schools. A teacher who does not want to be vaccinated puts the lives of colleagues and students at risk. Children are suffering and dying because of the denial of supposedly responsible adults. Let us come together as parents and demand that teachers, coaches and school staff be immunized.

Conversation of opinion
Questions around the Covid-19 vaccine and its deployment.

We can all do it. It is time we got proactive. No more excuses; Get up and fight.

D “New York City teachers’ shooting warrant may continue»(Press article, September 28):

It seems that some teachers want to keep the current option of testing instead of getting the shot. The best way to solve this problem is to give them two choices. Either they get vaccinated for free, or they agree to be tested daily (with a rapid test) and at their own expense.

There is no reason why school districts should pay for testing. There shouldn’t be a weekly test option, as then it is possible to test negative, get Covid-19 and release it before the next test.

Given the choice of a free vaccine or expensive tests, you might be amazed at how many teachers and school staff will receive the vaccines.

For the publisher:

Why not let unvaccinated health workers keep their jobs and set up mobile clinics outside hospitals where they can take care of unvaccinated Covid patients? This will allow hospitals to care for non-Covid patients and patients with urgent needs who are being turned away by stranded intensive care units.

This approach respects the commitment of the unvaccinated to opt for freedom of choice over the public good. It may also persuade some of these holdouts to get vaccinated.

For the publisher:

The deplorable abuse of Haitian asylum seekers by border patrol agents in Texas did not happen in a vacuum. This is the direct result of decades of racist immigration policies that have caused disproportionate harm to black migrants, and the Biden administration’s deliberate choice to break promises to treat those seeking safety in the United States humanely. .

For months, refugee rights activists have warned that President Biden is doubling down on many of his predecessor’s most nefarious immigration policies.

In fact, the injustice and inhumanity we saw in Del Rio, Texas, is exactly why Oxfam and our partners sue Biden administration on xenophobes and racists Title 42 political who is used deport Haitians and others over largely debunked health claims.

It didn’t have to be that way. The United States has the potential to be a beacon of hope for persecuted people around the world. It is time for President Biden and Congress to live up to this potential and transform our immigration system for good.

D “President resorts to stricter border measures“(One page, September 23):

Our recovering economy is hampered by a labor shortage in poorly paid and unpleasant essential jobs. A workforce willing to take on these jobs recently showed up in Del Rio, Texas. We therefore deport them to their small devastated country of origin, where many have not lived for years.

We are doing this because… ???

D “Desperate and leaving Texas to have abortions“(One page, September 27):

Is this really what the conservative Supreme Court justices want for the women of Texas? Cruelty defies reason. After nearly 50 years of Roe v. Wade, this setback, identified with the men of the Republican Party, is perhaps what finally shatters the potential resurgence of Trumpism in America.
