SLAM DUNK This week’s new bestseller bundle includes two very different titles involving athletics. On the non-fiction side in n ° 7, we have “Where the tomorrows are not promised”, a memoir by Carmelo Anthony, who plays number 7 for the Los Angeles Lakers. Written with D. Watkins, author of several books, including “We Speak for Ourselves: How Woke Culture Prohibits Progress”, the story is dedicated “to every child who knows there is more to this life than people tell them is possible.” It starts in Brooklyn, where Anthony was born, with the view from his family’s apartment: “After pushing our old speaker against the wall and climbing my little body on it, I could look through the black iron bars. . Anthony describes “hoopers, dreamers, rappers”, older children “trading dope for money”, girls playing jacks and his sister Michelle doing double Dutch “with a footwork ballerina ”. As his vision broadens, readers can see the rest of his family, their move to Baltimore, their losses and challenges, and Anthony’s road to the NBA Fun Fact: Anthony is not the only successful Laker at the moment. LeBron James’ book, “We Are Family,” is # 4 on the list of mid-level hardcover books. Maybe numbers 7 and 6 will have a reading together?

GRAND CHELEM In other sports news, Liane Moriarty’s ninth novel, “Apples Never Fall”, about a family of Australian tennis players, makes the hardcover fiction list at # 1. The story centers around Joy Delaney, the matriarch and former co-owner of an elite tennis academy, is missing. Moriarty reflects on Joy’s long marriage, her relationship with her grown children, and the mysterious appearance of a bloody stranger in her home; like all of Moriarty’s novels, this one is a kind of literary turducken: a mystery within an uplifting narrative within a domestic drama. In a makeover, we learn that Joy reluctantly took a memoir writing class with a literary friend who came up with “Game, Set, Match” as the title for her book. Joy wonders, “Was tennis her life?” theme? “That might not be the theme of ‘Apples Never Fall,’ but it’s certainly an interesting leitmotif – just as spinning was in Moriarty’s (underrated) third novel,” What Alice Forgot, “in which a mother of three suffers from amnesia after falling on a stationary bike. Due to this training gone awry, she is able to look at her life from a new perspective and to make changes that are worth breaking a sweat.
