As the hub of New York City commuters, the Port Authority Bus Station in Midtown Manhattan is known for many things. Being an art gallery has not always been one of them, although it sheltered works of art.

But a new public art installation at the Port Authority, “Inside Out: NY Together,” will turn a long exterior wall – a stretch 40 feet high and 600 feet long, along West 40th Street – into one. gallery, from October 3.

The photographic project, which aims to introduce New Yorkers and everyday visitors to the city’s reopening, will feature black and white portraits of 1,200 people crossing the region.

“This is who we are,” said Barbara A. Blair, president of the Garment District Alliance, which is leading the project in cooperation with the Port Authority, in an interview.

“It’s important to make a statement,” she said, highlighting the city’s diversity and resilience. “The city is a city because we are all there together.

In a matter of minutes, passers-by who choose to participate in the project can become art, as the wall turns into a gallery. A photo booth truck will be set up on West 40th Street, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, and the portraits will be printed on site and taped to the wall.

Blair said: “This exhibit personifies how all of these people are together, whatever they do – whether they are cleaning the streets, an artist with an exhibit or a doctor in a hospital – that’s what makes a community.”

The project is part of an initiative, “Upside down,“Created by the French artist JR, which had platforms all over the world.
